Huawei's ultrathin Mate X7 casts doubt on Galaxy S26 Ultra's camera capabilities

During our testing, the Huawei Mate X7 showed some technical limitations compared with other high-end foldables, particularly in cellular connectivity and overall performance. Read our review to find out whether the device is still worth considering at a price of around €1,900 ($2,175) even with these shortcomings.
Camera image quality is where the Huawei Mate X7 truly excels. Its 50 MP main shooter uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor – fairly large for a foldable phone – and its variable aperture of f/1.49 to f/4.0 remains a genuine highlight for this class of device.
That said, the phone’s major advantage lies beyond its main camera. Our in-depth review explores where the Mate X7 stands out most from its Samsung and Honor rivals.
Foldable Android phone with exceptional main camera
Despite the very slim chassis, the Huawei Mate X7’s main camera theoretically has what it takes to produce good-looking photos. To better gauge the imaging performance of the foldable, we put it through a camera comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. This also allowed us to see how the Mate X7’s 50 MP RYYB sensor stacks up against the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 200 MP sensor, both in daylight and low-light conditions.
The Huawei Mate X7 delivers excellent dynamic range. Based on the comparison shots, the foldable was unexpectedly the much stronger device in terms of image sharpness and low-light performance, leaving the Galaxy S25 Ultra with little room to compete. Since Samsung hasn’t meaningfully upgraded the main camera on its 2026 flagship beyond a faster lens, the Galaxy S26 Ultra may struggle to keep up with the upcoming Oppo or Vivo Ultra models.
