Galaxy G Fold: First Samsung tri-fold tipped to surpass Huawei Mate XT in key area
Earlier this week, we reported on Samsung Display showcasing a new version of the Flex G. While just a concept, the form factor shown is expected to underpin what will eventually become Samsung's first tri-fold smartphone.
According to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), that will still be the case. By contrast, Huawei is believed to still be pursuing the form factor championed by the Mate XT, a concept of which Samsung Display also demoed at MWC 2025 this week as the Flex S.
The design of the Mate XT and allows the left third of its 10.2-inch foldable panel to serve as a 6.4-inch cover display in its fully folded state. By contrast, the Flex G contains two inwardly folding thirds to ensure its foldable display is protected when not in use. As a result, there is no cover display on the Flex G.
Reportedly, Samsung plans to overcome this shortcoming by installing a 6.49-inch cover display on what is currently referred to as the Galaxy G Fold. Incidentally, this is approximately the same size as the cover display inside the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, and about 0.2-inches larger than the equivalent inside the Galaxy Z Fold6 (curr. $1,549 on Amazon).
Young maintains that a Q3 or Q4 2025 launch is more likely than one during Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event. With that being said, he believes there is a 'good chance' that Samsung could mention the Galaxy G Fold during said event, which it is expected to primarily use to showcase the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7.
