GTA 6 Online apparently a separate download – and what that could mean

New Xbox Store listings suggest that the story mode and GTA 6 Online could be downloaded separately. While that could be a practical feature, it also raises some less encouraging possibilities.

The Grand Theft Auto VI listing on the Xbox Store was recently updated with several new add-ons, although they currently appear to be visible only to players who have pre-ordered the game. Alongside the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, the Vintage Vice City Pack, and an as-yet-unidentified item simply called "Extra," the store also includes a separate listing for the Story. This suggests that the single-player campaign and the online mode may be downloadable independently. The listings were apparently first spotted by X user GlowDevs, before SynthPotato shared the discovery on the platform.

A practical solution for storage space

Separate downloads for the story campaign and the online mode could prove to be quite useful. If the campaign and GTA Online can be downloaded independently, they can likely be uninstalled separately as well. Players who finish the story and then switch exclusively to GTA Online would no longer need to keep the campaign's large data files installed on their console. That could free up a significant amount of storage space, especially since GTA 6's massive open world is expected to require a substantial amount of disk space.

But the split could have a downside

The discovery also raises a less welcome possibility: GTA Online could be released as a standalone product, separate from GTA 6. One early indication is that Rockstar has been explicitly marketing the main game – scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 – as a "single-player experience." Whether GTA Online will eventually be included at no additional cost for owners of GTA 6 (currently available for pre-order on Amazon), sold separately, or even released as a free-to-play title remains unknown. Rockstar Games has yet to officially unveil the new online experience.
