DJI Osmo Action 4: New US$399 action camera gets ahead of GoPro Hero 12 Black with 1/1.3-inch camera and other improvements
DJI has now announced the Osmo Action 4, following last week's introduction of the Air 3 drone. Unlike last year, DJI has managed to release its new action camera over a month before GoPro, which is expected to offer up the Hero 12 Black in mid-September. Allegedly, the Osmo Action 4 will achieve significantly better image quality than its predecessor, as well as the current GoPro Hero 11, among other changes and improvements.
According to DJI, the Osmo Action 4 contains a 1/1.3-inch camera sensor, which is much larger than the 1/1.7-inch and 1/1.9-inch equivalents in the Osmo Action 3 and GoPro Hero 11, respectively. The company adds that it has paired the new sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens that has a 155-degree field of view and an f/2.8 aperture. Additionally, DJI complements the sensor with its RockSteady 3.0+ digital image stabilisation and HorizonSteady.
Moreover, the Osmo Action 4 can shoot photos at 10 MP in JPEG or RAW, and videos in up to 4K/120 FPS with a 130 Mbit/s peak data rate. Meanwhile, DJI claims to have improved dynamic range and colour representation thanks to a dedicated colour temperature sensor and 10-bit D-Log M support. Furthermore, DJI installs a 1.4-inch touchscreen on the front and a 2.25-inch equivalent on the back that serves as a viewfinder.
Elsewhere, the Osmo Action 4 has a 1,770 mAh battery that is rated for up to 160 minutes of usage between charges and a MicroSD card reader that supports up to 512 GB cards. The DJI Osmo Action 4 is available now for US$399, sold as the Osmo Action 4 Standard Combo. DJI sells various other accessories packages too, up to the US$499 Adventure Combo, which includes a second battery, a 1.5-metre selfie stick and a charging cradle.
