GoPro has confirmed plans to replace the GoPro Max, a 360 degree camera that the company has been selling since 2019. According to the company, the 360-degree camera will eventually arrive as the GoPro MAX 2.0.

Yesterday, GoPro introduced the Hero 12 Black, another iterative update for its action camera series that makes only minor changes over its predecessor. Often, GoPro releases more than one model annually, as was the case last year with the Hero 11 Black and Hero 11 Black Mini. While that did not prove the case this time around, GoPro has since teased that it has another action camera in the works.

Surprisingly, GoPro confirmed on Twitter that it is developing a second-generation Max, the first generation of which it debuted four years ago. To recap, the GoPro Max replaced the Fusion 360 and differed from the Hero 8 Black by integrating a 16.6 MP camera with a 360-degree field of view (FoV). Additionally, GoPro included a secondary 5.5 MP sensor that helped it capture 270° PowerPano ultra-wide angle footage at 6.2 MP as well.

According to GoPro, it will eventually replace the Max with a MAX 2.0. The company adds that the wait between models 'will be worth it' too. Arguably, Insta360 has since absorbed the market that GoPro abandoned, so it may take a lot of effort by the latter to wrestle market share from the former. Unfortunately, GoPro has not provided any other details yet, nor are there any indications when the company will release a new action camera.
