Nikon Zf full-frame retro camera confirmed for 2024 with brand new sensor, robust build, and fast autofocus - rumour
It had previously been basically confirmed that Nikon would be unveiling a new full-frame mirrorless camera before the end of September. Speculation pointed to either an update to the Z6 lineup or a retro-styled body similar to the Nikon Df in the heat of the DSLR era. Recent reports, however, seem to confirm that Nikon will release a Zf retro-themed camera before the end of 2023.
The information comes by way of a DPReview commenter, Orsonneke, that claims Nikon presented the camera to Nikon Pro dealers on August 2. While those present at the presentation are under NDA, Orsonneke does share some vague details about the upcoming camera.
While previous rumours posited that the Zf would be equipped with the same sensor from the Z6, the new information points to a new 25 MP sensor with updated autofocus and no stacking. The rumours also indicate that the body of the Zf, although similar in design to the APS-C Zfc, will be more robust.
Additionally, it was also confirmed that the new camera will be sold in bundles, but that no new lenses would be released to match the camera's aesthetic. This leaves potential buyers with the choice of pairing their US$2,000 retro camera with one of the Nikkor Z (SE) lenses, or any one of the third-party options out there, like the ArtraLab Nonikkor series.
If comments on previous Notebookcheck articles and DPReview are anything to go by, there is certainly a market for premium mid-range cameras with a vintage aesthetic. If true, the new Nikon Zf should appease those buyers thanks to its versatile sensor resolution and full-frame nature.
