DJI Osmo Action 3 starts for US$329 with a new design, long battery life and improved waterproofing
DJI has launched the Osmo Action 3, its latest action camera and seemingly a competitor for both new GoPro models that also arrive today. As expected, DJI has moved away from the Action 2's design, which it continues to sell on its website. As such, the Osmo Action 3 is incompatible with Action 2 accessories. Still, the Osmo Action 3 should be more robust than its predecessor, while also delivering superior battery life and improved image quality.
Specifically, the Osmo Action 3 has an 'Extreme Battery', which is DJI's marketing for a 1,770 mAh battery. Reputedly, the Osmo Action 3 should last up to 160 minutes while recording 4K videos, which only drops by 10 minutes even in -20 °C temperatures. Additionally, the Osmo Action 3 offers 16 metres waterproofing without a dedicated case, unlike the Action 2. Moreover, the 145 g action camera has two displays, with a 2.25-inch rear display joined by a front display that measures 1.4-inches across.

Based on DJI's specifications, the Osmo Action 3 has the same 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor as the Action 2 that outputs at 12 MP with a 155° FOV and an f/2.8 aperture. However, DJI has included RockSteady 3.0 software for superior image stabilisation. Like its predecessor, the Osmo Action 3 also offers HorizonSteady, HorizonBalancing and a quick-release design. Furthermore, DJI has integrated three microphones within the Osmo Action 3, rather than one in the Action 2's camera unit and three in its front touchscreen module.
The Osmo Action 3 starts at US$329 with its Standard Combo pack, which comes with one battery, a quick-release adapter mount and an adhesive base, among other accessories. By contrast, the Adventure Combo pack adds a multifunctional battery case, a 1.5-metre extension rod, two more batteries and another set of rubber lens protectors, quick-release adapter mounts and locking screws. The Osmo Action 3 is orderable now, although it will not start shipping until later this month in some markets and October in others.
