Asus currently offers three 16-inch gaming laptops in the ROG Strix series, and we just recently tested the brand-new Strix G16 with the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop. Positioned above is the Strix SCAR 16, which can be equipped with an RTX 5090 Laptop and also sports an additional display on the lid.
Additionally, Asus has released an AMD model of the Strix G16 that is powered by the Ryzen 9 9955HX but has several limitations. For instance, the chassis is different from the Intel model, as the new maintenance hatch is missing. Most notably, it’s only equipped with the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop. That’s a real shame because the AMD processor offers slightly better gaming performance, as we've seen in our in-depth comparison of these two new HX processors.
Even though the chassis is made entirely of plastic, the overall build quality is very good and its dark gray surfaces aren't as susceptible to fingerprints as the black Strix SCAR. Apart from the extra display on the lid, the regular Strix G16 also features the new LED light bar on the bottom and the illuminated logo and keyboard, so gamers can really knock themselves out with colorful lights. Optionally, users who prefer to be more subtle can entirely deactivate them.
Another difference is the display, as the Strix G16 features a standard IPS panel that leaves a good impression when gaming. Furthermore, the new GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop offers very lots of performance and is well-suited for the native resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. That said, the RTX 5090 Laptop in the Strix SCAR 16 has an advantage, since it offers more VRAM and performs better especially at 4K.
But for QHD gaming, this doesn’t make a huge difference in many titles. It's worth noting that the overall gaming performance is very good, even though we have already tested faster devices with the RTX 5080 Laptop, such as the Lenovo Legion Pro 7 or XMG Neo 16. All these models utilize the 175-watt variant of the Nvidia graphics card.
