Some slight changes to the article made following the publication of the roadmap.
Ubisoft has announced Claws of Awaji, an upcoming DLC for Assassin's Creed Shadows. However, some fans anticipate new ways to battle in feudal Japan with Naoe and Yasuke. A modder has uncovered references to multiplayer functionality and maps in game files. While Ubisoft is unlikely to comment, Assassin's Creed multiplayer modes existed in previous entries in the series.
Insider Gaming first reported on the modder's discovery, which Sliderv2 shared on social media. The files contain references to TST_Multiplayer_Meo, RED_PVP_Maps, and RED_PVP_Gym. The code hints that the game's developers already plan to develop multiplayer modes and maps.
An Assassin's Creed Shadows multiplayer co-op mode may seem particularly intriguing. During the single-player campaign, gamers take control of two heroes with very different skill sets. Gameplay with Naoe focuses on stealth mechanics. Meanwhile, Yasuke utilizes his samurai abilities in direct confrontations. At the moment, it's not possible to use both characters simultaneously. In a co-op mode, either locally or online, Naoe and Yasuke could partner to complete missions.
The 2014 Assassin's Creed Unity also offered co-op missions through Ubisoft's servers. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag featured PvP or team-based battles. If rumors about Assassin's Creed Invictus are correct, Ubisoft may have a radically different multiplayer experience in mind.
In September 2024, a leaker described plans for a standalone Assassin's Creed title called Invictus. The game would take inspiration from the chaotic Fall Guys. Gamers could expect deathmatches, free-for-alls, and round-based speed games. 16-18 players would control characters from Assassin's Creed games on maps familiar to fans of the IP.
Considering Ubisoft's financial struggles, no project under development is safe. Still, impressive Assassin's Creed Shadows sales gave the publisher a needed boost.
Ubisoft just unveiled a roadmap for the game on April 30th, but sadly there is no mention of multiplayer features. Through free updates, gamers can still enjoy new quests, collaborations, and difficulty settings in the months to come.
