Project U had been in development at Ubisoft Annecy for at least five years. First officially mentioned in September 2022, it was described as a “new type of session-based co-op shooter.” Originally developed under the name "Pathfinder," the game followed a PvPvE format, with ten teams of four battling AI-controlled machines. Players would have fought through multiple zones before facing a final boss.
However, replayability became a major challenge, leading to design difficulties. Rising costs and repeated delays forced Ubisoft to move the game back into internal incubation in November 2024, though it was never officially canceled. The company has yet to comment on its future. Recently, the intro cinematic for Project U surfaced on YouTube, shared by leaker Shaun Weber.
The leaked video provides an intriguing glimpse into Project U, but its significance remains unclear. It may have been created before Ubisoft halted development or it could hint at a possible revival, assuming the studio has found a fresh direction. On Reddit, skepticism runs high. Many doubt the game will ever see the light of day, with some mocking Ubisoft’s frequent changes in strategy by calling it “Project U-Turn.” If development has indeed resumed, a radical redesign would be essential to differentiate it from the competition. Otherwise, Project U risks suffering the same fate as XDefiant, Ubisoft’s arena shooter that was shut down just months after launch.
