Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is an open-world shooter where players take on the role of an elite Ghost operative. The story unfolds on Auroa, a once-thriving tech haven now controlled by the Wolves, a rogue unit of former Ghosts. After a botched mission, players find themselves stranded, wounded and without backup. To survive and reclaim the island, they must confront the Wolves and uncover the secrets behind Skell Technology, a corporation at the heart of advanced military drone development.
When it comes to gameplay, Ghost Recon Breakpoint struggles with an identity crisis. It blends open-world exploration with survival and looter-shooter mechanics, yet at its core, it remains a tactical shooter built on careful planning, teamwork and stealth. Players don’t just take down enemy bases – they also need to treat injuries, manage resources and navigate dense forests or steep mountains.
A new stealth mechanic allows them to blend into mud or vegetation for silent takedowns. Breakpoint also introduced a loot system that categorizes weapons and armor into different tiers, a change that didn’t sit well with all fans. However, the vast open world, offering plenty of freedom, stands out as a highlight. The campaign can be played solo or in co-op with up to three others, while a PvP mode lets players test their skills against each other.
Exciting gunplay, but problematic genre mix
In GameStar’s review, Ghost Recon Breakpoint received praise for its thrilling assaults on enemy bases and solid gameplay. The engaging story approach and expansive open world with a well-crafted atmosphere were also highlighted positively. However, the blend of classic Ghost Recon tactics with looter-shooter and survival mechanics doesn’t fully come together. The review points out repetitive tasks and a loot system that feels superficial, having little real impact on gameplay. Another major criticism is the aggressive monetization through microtransactions, along with the always-online requirement, even for single-player.
Due to these issues, Ghost Recon Breakpoint has received mixed reviews on Metacritic. The Metascore sits at 58, while the User Score is a low 3.0. However, reception on Steam has been more favorable. With over 26,000 reviews, the open-world shooter holds a Mostly Positive
rating of 72%.
