In Split Fiction, everything centers on Mio and Zoe, two authors who couldn’t be more different. One crafts thrilling sci-fi adventures with cyber-ninjas and laser swords, while the other weaves epic fantasy tales of wizards, dragons and ancient prophecies. But when an experiment with a mysterious machine goes wrong, they are pulled into their own stories and must work together to find a way back to reality.
Teamwork isn't just important in Split Fiction, it's essential. The game is exclusively co-op, playable online or locally in split-screen. However, thanks to Friend's Pass support, only one player needs to own the game. The second player can simply download the Friend's Pass software and join for free. Throughout Split Fiction, players constantly shift between sci-fi and fantasy. Each chapter takes Mio and Zoe to a new environment, where they must adapt to the unique rules of that genre.
While Mio fights with laser swords, uses grappling hooks and moves through futuristic cities in the sci-fi world, Zoe relies on magic, deciphers ancient runes and rides dragons in the fantasy world. The battles are action-packed: In the sci-fi section, you have to hold your own against enemy robots, while giant monsters and magical creatures lurk in the fantasy world. In addition to the battles, puzzles are also a central part of the gameplay.
Excellent ratings
According to a review on PCGames, Split Fiction delivers an outstanding co-op experience, earning praise for its diverse gameplay mechanics and a story that is both thrilling and emotional. The art design, with its imaginative worlds and thoughtful details, was also well received, along with the charming dialogue and the dynamic between the protagonists. Technically, PCGames reports that the game runs smoothly with minimal bugs.
Criticism was minimal, with only a few points noted: the mandatory co-op mode, occasional loading times between sections and some respawns that placed players back in dangerous situations. Given its overwhelmingly positive reception, it's no surprise that Split Fiction is earning top marks. On Metacritic, critics awarded it a Metascore of 92, while players gave it a 9.4 User Score. Just four days after launch, the game had already amassed over 12,500 Steam reviews – 98% of them positive. On SteamDB, it currently holds the top spot in two categories: Hot Releases and Popular Releases.
