Assassin’s Creed Shadows is, perhaps, the most controversial Ubisoft game in recent memory. The long-awaited Japan entry in the Assassin’s Creed universe was met with initial backlash over the studio’s choice of lead characters. Since then, the controversies haven’t stopped, gaining so much momentum that they even reached the Japanese Prime Minister.
Considering this and the fact that Ubisoft has lately found it difficult to wow fans as it once did, there were concerns that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would fall flat on its face.
In what may come as a surprise to some gamers, AC Shadows has not only been positively received by the media but also by a sizeable population of gamers who have embraced the title.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has sold quite well
Assassin’s Creed Shadows officially released on March 20. Less than a day later, Ubisoft has announced on X that AC Shadows already has over one million players. This is big news not only because AC Shadows has crossed the 1 million player mark but also because, despite the negativity surrounding the title, the game has found an audience. If this pace continues, AC Shadows can become a huge commercial success.
While we don’t have numbers from console players running the game on the PS5 and/or the Xbox Series S | X, we can look at the data from SteamDB to get an idea of the player base. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is currently the top-selling game on Steam with a 24-hour peak player count of 41,412. Impressively, the game has a 192,809 24-hour peak viewer count on Twitch.
So, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is looking like a solid release from Ubisoft, something that the company desperately needs amidst the financial troubles that it has found itself in.
