Now that Apple currently has the best OLED displays in tablet format with the new M4 iPad Pro models, the next development step may be due in September 2024, this time for the iPhone 16 Pro. A leaker claims to have learned that significant progress can be expected, particularly in terms of brightness.

The leak on the Chinese network Weibo is short and succint (see screenshot below): the tipster claims to have received exclusive confirmation of a display upgrade for the iPhone 16 Pro. With 1,200 nits "manual" brightness and a maximum of 1,600 nits (with HDR content), the iPhone 16 Pro will supposedly have a display that is around 20% brighter in everyday use than the current iPhone 15 Pro (available here via Best Buy).

A leaker names specific brightness values for the improved iPhone 16 Pro display.

Around 20% more brightness in everyday life

1,200 nits doesn't sound like a particularly record-breaking figure if you compare it with the record values advertised on certain Android devices, although these are usually very limited peak values that can only be achieved with HDR content. Apple specifies the iPhone 15 Pro with 1,000 nits of "maximum typical" brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness in HDR, and 2,000 nits of peak brightness outdoors.

If the first value for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 ProMax increases to 1,200 nits, this would mean 20% more brightness in everyday use and thus a substantial improvement. The question remains as to just how reliable this leaker is. One of his earlier leaks concerned the 2024 iPad Pro, which has just officially launched with a nano-texture glass option and which he had predicted in March would with come a matte display. In this respect, it is not unlikely that the current information is correct.
