Apple goes bananas: iPhone 14, M2 iPad Pro, and entry-level MacBook Pro join list of over a dozen products rumored for a fall '22 release
Apple really does seem to be prepared to go bananas with product launches in 2022. The fruit company not only has a packed spring coming up but also a mad fall (autumn) lineup to please investors in time for the vital holiday quarter of the year. In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman outlined the potential Apple products that could be making an appearance in the second half of the year:
To that end, I’m told that Apple is readying the widest array of new hardware products in its history this fall. That makes sense: My back-of-the-envelope list includes four new iPhones, a low-end MacBook Pro, an updated iMac, the new Mac Pro, a revamped MacBook Air, an AirPods Pro upgrade, three Apple Watches, a low-end iPad and iPad Pros.
It’s worth investigating some of these a bit closer, which noted leaker Dylan (@dylandkt) has also been doing. The four new iPhones are expected to be the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. So of course, no space for an iPhone 14 Mini, as has been frequently rumored, and apparently there is no in-display Touch ID sensor to look forward to either. In addition, ProMotion technology will only be heading to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models.
The “low-end iPad and iPad Pros” may be part of an intriguing leak from earlier this month that detailed no less than an astonishing 11 iPad model numbers (iPadOS 15 devices). Some of the part numbers may not get used but there is still an indication that a couple of new iPads should be incoming. Gurman reckons an iPad Pro with M2 processor could turn up in fall, with the tablet getting an “updated design” and support for wireless charging. However, there are some "concerns" regarding that latter power-related functionality, while tipster Dylan also claims that the 2022 iPad Pro series will feature Mini-LED panels.
There has been another mention of the potential for a new MacBook Pro laptop to come out later this year, which could end up being the rumored M2 MacBook Pro 14 that should be a cheaper alternative to the current MacBook Pro 14 and 16 models with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. The revamped 2022 MacBook Air has been in the news a lot too, with it expected to come with the M2 Apple Silicon and a refreshed design.
The 2022 iMac could be a larger version of the current 24-inch M1-powered iMac, with the possibilities of the display size reaching 27 inches and the inclusion of the next-generation M2 SoC. Like most of the other Apple products on this list, the Mac Pro has also been in the news lately, with a leak stating it could come with a chipset architecture (40 CPU cores?) that features a powerful extension of the current M1 Max silicon.
More Apple Watches should be arriving before the holiday season, with the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2, and a rugged Apple Watch Explorer Edition all in the mix for a possible fall release. Last but not least, the AirPods Pro 2 device should also see some changes in design over its predecessor. It’s a packed season for the Cupertino company, with over a dozen products reportedly incoming right on time to contribute to an absolute bonanza of a quarterly financial report for Apple.
