There have already been a few rumors about the laptops that Apple may reveal in 2022, with a refreshed MacBook Air sporting M2 Apple Silicon being the frontrunner for a likely release. However, leaker Dylan (@dylandkt) has offered up some more details in regard to models and timeframe, things that have been touched upon in the past by Mark Gurman. Apparently, Apple fans can expect to see a new M2 MacBook Pro 14 and M2 MacBook Air before the year is out.
Starting with the M2 MacBook Pro 14 (2022) laptop, the source states that it will replace the current M1-powered MacBook Pro 13. It will take up residence as a new entry-level laptop while those looking for something with more power can still choose between the MacBook Pro 14 or MacBook Pro 16 with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. The tipster also claims that this 2022 MacBook Pro 14 will have the same design as the 2021 models, which makes sense.
As for the redesigned M2 MacBook Air, Dylan reckons it will be launched around the same time as the M2 MacBook Pro 14 in “2H of 2022”. Many were expecting the refreshed MacBook Air to arrive around spring time, but the Apple M2 SoC may not be ready for release until the second half of 2022. Unfortunately, this means that it’s possible the long-awaited 2022 MacBook Air has actually been delayed.
If that news is a bit of a gray cloud to some then there is a silver lining in regard to the potential price for the M2 MacBook Pro 14. The tipster says the laptop will “receive a slight price increase over the previous generation”, with the M1 MacBook Pro 13 officially listed from US$1,299. Considering the larger form and the next-generation SoC, a price increase can certainly be expected, but if it is around US$1,499 as has been suggested then it will be very competitive compared to the US$1,999 required for the cheapest M1 Pro-powered MacBook Pro 14.
