Apple has not updated the AirTag in nearly 4 years now, and that might have something to do with all the less than positive press associated with its first generation.
The Cupertino behemoth clearly intended the accessory as a stylish way of keeping track of one's keys, luggage or other personal items via a wireless connection to one's iPhone; however, in reality, they have all too often been put to less acceptable use-cases from earmarking vehicles for later theft to stalking.
Apple is not giving up on the concept quite yet, according to Bloomberg contributor Mark Gurman. Its second generation is now tipped to arrive some time in 2025 with an updated design more resistant to disassembly for nefarious purposes such as the removal of its in-built speaker.
The "AirTag 2" might also offer an upgraded chip that confers the ability to stay connected to it over a greater distance. In the meantime, the first-gen model is discounted by $10 to $19 on Amazon.
