PhotoTag is currently being funded on Kickstarter as a rather unusual alternative to the Apple AirTag, which can be ordered on Amazon for $23. What sets this tracker apart is the built-in color e-ink display, which can be customized to show personal pictures.
This feature is also practical because it can display contact information, which makes it easier to return lost items to the owner. Since e-ink displays consume no power when showing static images, the CR2032 battery inside the tracker is expected to last up to 10 months. However, there is a caveat to the design of the PhotoTag. It measures 1.77 x 1.38 x 0.31 inches and is significantly larger than an AirTag, which can be inconvenient for some use cases.
The device is water-resistant according to the IP65 standard. Conveniently, PhotoTag supports Apple's "Find My" as well as Google's "Find My Device" app, so both iPhone and Android smartphone owners can use this tracker. It should be noted that Google's network can be less reliable in some cases, as certain tests claim that iPhones have better chances of locating the tracker.
Price and availability
PhotoTag is currently being funded on Kickstarter, where a single PhotoTag can be pre-ordered for $29. The retail price is eventually expected to increase to $59. Shipping is slated to kick off in April 2025. These prices do not include import taxes and shipping costs. PhotoTag is the first project of founder Xiang Liu, and backers should be aware that crowdfunding campaigns always entail a risk that the product might never hit the market.
