Apple's AirTag tracker has been a wildly popular method of keeping track of small items, like keys, wallets, and even iPhones. However, the tiny tracker is getting a bit long in the tooth; it was released about four years ago in April 2021. A new rumor claims that Apple will update the AirTag this summer.
The speculation, which comes courtesy of a leaker going by the name Kosutami, states that Apple will launch the new AirTag (aka the AirTag 2) in either May or June of this year, just in time for summer. This lines up with a claim from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who said a new AirTag would launch around the middle of 2025.
Current rumors paint some major improvements for the AirTag 2, including the Ultra Wideband chip used in the iPhone 15 and 16 families and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. This chip reportedly increases signal range by up to 3 times, which would be roughly 60 meters (or about 200 feet).
The AirTag 2 is also rumored to better integrate with the Apple Vision Pro (whatever that means), according to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Others believe the AirTag 2 will have an improved speaker that will not only be louder but will also be more difficult to remove, which could make it harder for bad actors to alter an AirTag and use it to track an individual.
Of course, take this rumor with a grain of salt. The AirTag is due for an update, but we will have to wait and see when Apple plans to officially launch an AirTag 2.
You can buy a 4-pack of AirTags on Amazon for $67.99 as of press time (normally $99.99).
