Apple AirTag 2: Successor to the innovative tracker to be released later, which is good news for customers
In 2021, Apple introduced the AirTag, a compact device that supports localization. Mobile tracking systems are not a fundamentally new or innovative invention, but AirTags are particularly compact and also work in a slightly different way. Unlike other products, Apple does not use GPS for localization, but instead relies on the Where Is? network. Simply put, this consists of compatible Apple devices such as iPhones that ping the AirTags and report their position. Accordingly, localization in areas such as deserts is not possible, but a mobile phone connection is not necessary either. More precise positioning is also possible with certain Apple devices.
The concept works well, but is not free from criticism. Now, Mark Gurman has given an outlook on a new generation of AirTags and their expected release date in his Bloomberg newsletter. Gunman claims that the new AirTag generation will not appear until 2025, as the warehouses with first generation AirTags are still full and so Apple does not need to introduce a new generation so soon. Customers may thus benefit from price reductions.
Gurman also comments on the possible innovations of a second AirTag generation. A new ultra-wideband location may be installed in these trackers, which would allow for greater range. This increase in range would be particularly relevant in suburban or rural regions with a correspondingly low density of Apple devices. But information on improved tracking or longer battery life is lacking.
