Tile was once the market leader until Apple's AirTag took the market by storm. Today, most manufacturers of trackers rely on either Apple's "Find My" or Google's "Find My Device" network. Creating a device that stands out from similar devices is difficult. Like Samsung's attempt to distinguish its Galaxy Tags with SmartThings features, for example.
Instead of making the Tile trackers compatible with the Apple and Google networks, parent company Life360 is now taking a completely different approach. In the announcement video of the new "Find with Live360" trackers (embedded below), the many potential disadvantages of products such as Apple AirTags are mentioned - if there is no compatible device within Bluetooth range, they simply cannot be tracked. The solution to this problem? Satellites.
Life360 intends to connect the 66 million devices compatible with the Tile network to the Hubble satellite network using "Bluetooth to Satellite" technology in order to locate the trackers worldwide. Trackers should be able to switch seamlessly between local Bluetooth and satellite tracking. Bluetooth requires far less energy and also works indoors, while satellite tracking should also work in remote areas without a mobile network. The first Tile Slim and Tile Pro devices, which support this satellite system, will be launched in 2025, shortly after which third-party providers will also be given access to the network, which is set to consist of a total of 96 satellites by 2028.
