Case - A plastic chassis for the Aorus 17
The case of the Aorus laptop is made of matte black plastic with smooth surfaces. An illuminated Aorus logo on the back of the lid sets the accent. The thin display frame complements the elegant appearance of the laptop. Connoisseurs of earlier Aorus 17 models will notice that the camera has moved to the area above the screen. The battery is inbuilt. The interior is accessible after removing the bottom cover.
The case is well manufactured. Gap dimensions are even, there are no material protrusions and/or sharp edges. The base unit and lid bend a little under torsion, but this is not a serious issue in everyday use. The hinges keep the lid firmly in place, but a one-handed opening is possible. The maximum opening angle is around 130 degrees.
The weight and measurements of the Aorus 17 are relatively small for a 17.3-inch notebook - this is also true for the Razer Blade 17. Of course, both do not match the dimensions of a 15.6-inch laptop.
Hardware - Gigabyte notebook offers Thunderbolt 4
The gaming laptop comes with two USB-A slots (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and one USB-C slot (Thunderbolt 4). The latter supports DisplayPort via USB-C. Therefore, together with the HDMI connection and the dedicated mini DisplayPort, there are three video outputs. The Aorus 17 does not have an onboard memory card reader.
Communication
The WLAN module contains a chip (AX211) from Intel that supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards. The transmission speeds determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the immediate vicinity, small distance between notebook and server PC) were excellent. Network connectivity is handled by Realtek's RTL8125 Gigabit Ethernet controller, which does its job flawlessly.

Webcam
The webcam (0.9 MP) creates images with a maximum resolution of 1,280x720 pixels. There is a problem with the color accuracy: the tones deviate significantly from the target. The camera does not have a mechanical cover, but it can be permanently deactivated in the computer's BIOS.
Accessories
Besides the usual documents (quick start guide and warranty information), no other accessories are included with the notebook.
Maintenance
After removing all screws on the underside of the device, the bottom cover can be removed using a flat spatula or a putty knife. Afterward, you have access to the SSD, the second M.2 slot (PCIe 4, M.2-2280), the WLAN module, the RAM, the BIOS battery, and the fans.
Warranty
Gigabyte gives a two-year warranty for the 17.3-inch laptop. Warranty extensions are not available.
Input Devices - The keyboard offers RGB lighting
Keyboard
The notebook features an illuminated chiclet keyboard with a number pad. The smooth keys have a medium key travel and a clear pressure point. The keyboard yields minimally during typing, which did not prove to be bothersome. The two-stage key illumination is controlled via a key combination. Overall, Gigabyte delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use.
Touchpad
A multi-touch capable clickpad (~12.2 x 7.6 cm) serves as a mouse replacement. Its smooth surface makes gliding easy for the fingers. It also responds to inputs in the corners. The pad offers a short stroke and a clear pressure point.
Display - The IPS panel could be brighter
While the contrast (1096:1) of the matte 17.3-inch screen (1,920x1,080 pixels) meets the target value (> 1000:1), the brightness (266.8 cd/m²) is too low. We consider values above 300 cd/m² to be good. The 360 Hz panel offers short response times. PWM flickering could not be detected.

Performance - Alder Lake and Ampere provide enough power for years to come
Gigabyte's Aorus 17 is a 17.3-inch gaming notebook that brings every current game smoothly to the screen.
Test Conditions
The pre-installed Gigabyte Control Center provides various performance profiles that allow for control over CPU and GPU performance, fan activity, screen brightness, and color temperature, among other things. We use the higher-level AI mode here. The Control Center then selects the appropriate profile automatically.
Some benchmarks were carried out with the profiles "Power Saving Silence Mode" and "Turbo Mode" continuously active. The latter is not recommended for long-term use since the fans continuously operate at full speed.
Creator Mode | Turbo Mode | Gaming Mode | Meeting Mode | Power Saving Silence Mode | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Power Limit 1 | 70 Watt | 70 Watt | 55 Watt | 15 Watt | 15 Watt |
Power Limit 2 | 115 Watt | 115 Watt | 115 Watt | 30 Watt | 30 Watt |
Processor
The Core i7-12700H processor (Alder Lake) consists of six performance cores (Hyperthreading, 2.4 to 4.7 GHz) and eight efficiency cores (no Hyperthreading, 1.8 to 3.5 GHz). In total, this amounts to 20 logical CPU cores.
The multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark is operated briefly at high clock rates (P-cores: 3.7 to 4.1 GHz, E-cores: 3 to 3.1 GHz), before dropping (P-Cores: 3.1 GHz, E-Cores: 2.6 GHz). The single thread test runs continuously at high speeds (P-cores: 4.1 to 4.7 GHz, E-cores: 3.5 GHz).
We checked whether the CPU Turbo is used continuously under power supply operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop. High clock rates can only be maintained for short periods. Afterward, both the P- and E-cores operate at speeds in the mid turbo range. Selectively activating the performance profile "Turbo Mode" does not yield any advantages.

GPU Performance
The actual performance of an RTX 3000 GPU depends on a few factors: cooling, memory configuration, and the maximum TGP that a notebook manufacturer chooses within the limits defined by Nvidia. Gigabyte gives the installed GeForce RTX 3070 Ti laptop GPU a maximum TGP of 130 watts (115 watts + 15 watts Dynamic Boost). However, the Witcher 3 test reveals that the Dynamic Boost is not (or cannot be) fully utilized.
The benchmark results are slightly above the previously determined RTX 3070 Ti average. Activation of the "Turbo Mode" profile causes a small performance increase. The GPU can draw on fast GDDR6 graphics memory (8,192 MB). The processor's integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7 graphics core is active and the notebook works with Nvidia's Optimus switching graphics solution.

Emissions - The Gigabyte Aorus makes a lot of noise
Noise
The Aorus laptop produced normal levels of noise during the entire load range - measured by the hardware. In everyday use (office, internet), noise levels are within limits, but it becomes loud under load (49 to 51 dB(A)). The fans are noticeable in two respects: on the one hand, they wobble slightly, and on the other hand, they emit a whistling noise at higher rotational speeds.
The noise under load can be reduced by using the performance profile "Power Saving Silence Mode" - at the expense of performance. Gaming is still possible at reduced settings.

Battery Life
The 17.3-incher achieves runtimes of 5:08 h and 6:06 h in the WLAN test (visiting websites via a script) and video test (short movie Big Buck Bunny (H.264 encoding, FHD) in a loop), respectively. During both tests, the notebook's energy-saving features were deactivated and the display brightness set to around 150 cd/m². The wireless modules were also switched off for the video test.
In short, the Aorus 17 only delivers average battery runtimes. When compared to the battery capacity (99 Wh), this is not particularly impressive. Rival laptops get similar runtimes out of relatively much lower capacities.

Verdict - A powerful high-end gaming machine
The Aorus 17 is a potent gaming notebook in a 17.3-inch format designed for FHD gaming at maximum settings. A Core i7-12700H processor and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU make this possible. A lightning-fast PCIe 4 SSD (1 TB) provides the necessary storage space and ensures short loading times.
With the Aorus 17 XE4, Gigabyte delivers a well-rounded, high-performance gaming notebook.
The processor and GPU are capable of operating at high speeds. However: the CPU clock is reduced to a medium turbo-level after short periods. Heating and noise levels are in the usual range - it becomes loud and hot under load. The energy profile "Power Saving Silence Mode" reduces noise, but the decreased computing power is still sufficient for gaming under some restrictions.
The matte display with stable viewing angles (FHD, IPS, 360 Hz) scores in terms of response times, contrast, color representation, and color space coverage. But the brightness is too low, and battery life falls in the average range. Another shortcoming: the battery cannot be charged via the USB-C port (Thunderbolt 4). But the port does offer other options such as connecting an external GPU or a comprehensive docking solution.
As an alternative to the Aorus 17, the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16 G7 is a possibility. This gets more performance out of the same CPU-GPU combination and has a much brighter screen in 16:10 format.
