Anbernic RG28XX specifications announced before new retro gaming handheld release
Roughly a week has passed since Anbernic introduced the RG28XX, a smaller alternative to many of its other recent gaming handhelds like the RG35XX 2024, RG35XX H, RG35XX SP and RG556 (curr. $269.99 on Amazon). Initially, the company only revealed what the RG28XX looked like while highlighting a few of the game libraries it could emulate. However, Anbernic has now outlined all key device specifications before its official release.
As expected, Anbernic has equipped the RG28XX with an Allwinner H700 chipset, which includes four ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores clocked at 1.5 GHz, as well as a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU with two cores. Based on other gaming handhelds using the Allwinner H700, the RG28XX should be capable of running up to SEGA Dreamcast and PlayStation Portable games, albeit with frame skip enabled in some titles. Additionally, the RG28XX contains 1 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and a 3,100 mAh battery that Anbernic rates for up to 8 hours of usage between charges.
As usual, the gaming handheld has two MicroSD cards too, although it lacks Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity. Instead, it is only possible to connect wireless controllers by using a 2.4 GHz dongle through the device's sole USB Type-C port. With that being said, the RG28XX has a HDMI port for external display output. Furthermore, Anbernic equips the RG28XX with a 2.83-inch IPS display that outputs at 640 x 480 with full OCA lamination. Unfortunately, Anbernic has not yet revealed a launch date or pricing. Previous release schedules suggest that the RG28XX will be available later this month, though.
