Alienware m15, GTX 1070 Max-Q
The Alienware m15 is Dell Alienware’s finest attempt to stepping up the game to enter the thin-and-light gaming device market. Alienware is known for producing big and chunky gaming laptops, thus making this release a surprising move. The company claimed that it is 17 percent slimmer, 30 percent smaller, and 38 percent lighter compared to the previous generation Alienware 15. While it is a lightweight and slim gaming laptop, it certainly does not perform as great as other high performing gaming laptops. The m15 is the slimmest Alienware laptop ever at 2,18 kg (4.8 pound) and measures at 36,32 x 27,43 x 1,78-2,03 cm (14.3 x 10.8 x 0.7-0.8 inch). However, this isn't the lightest gaming system at its range yet, as both the MSI GS65 Stealth Thin and the Razer Blade 15 weigh less. Dell Alienware does not compromise build quality for weight: the lid is still made from anodized aluminium which looks and feels premium. The large backlit has an alien head in the center and there are three lines intersecting to the bottom half of the lid. The Dell Alienware m15 is available in Nebula Red and Epic Silver color options. The graphics processor is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q with 8192 MB GDDR5 vRAM. It also features 16 GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe storage and an Intel Core i7-8750H processor, which is a hexa-core processor that can Turbo Boost up to 4.1 GHz. The Alienware m15 sports NVIDIA’s Max-Q design, promoting an extra level of portability. It features portability without having too much compromise on hardware performance. The cooling system of the Alienware m15 is Alienware's Cryo-Tech v2.0 thermal system which features a dual-intake, dual-exhaust airflow design, a high-voltage driving fan with 90 fan blades cooling the CPU and GPU, load balancing heat pipes across GPU and CPU, and copper fin stacks. The fans of the Alienware m15 are fire resistant liquid-crystal polymer fans. It has 3-phase fan control to create less friction and circulating air more efficiently. As for network connectivity, the standard configuration includes a Dell 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 4.0 combo card. As for input/output ports, users will find a Killer Networks e2500 GbE port, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port with PowerShare, one Thunderbolt 3 port, one Alienware Graphics Amplifier port, HDMI 2.0, and a mini-DisplayPort 1.3. Finally, the Alienware m15 comes with a 60 Wh battery, but the user can upgrade to a longer-running 90 Wh unit. According to Dell, the 90 Wh battery can deliver up to 17 hours of runtime. Conclusively, Dell has entered the lightweight gaming laptop market with a fairly good attempt to compete with existing competitors in the market. The company has successfully delivered a device featuring sleek design and solid performance, although it’s still not the best in the market yet. The Alienware m15 makes good on its slim form with lots of gaming grunt and long battery life. It's a very solid 15-inch gaming laptop, though a few bits—bezels, body materials—need sprucing up.

If you don't mind paying for portability, the Alienware m15 is one of the best light(er) gaming laptops around right now. The slimmer, lighter design hasn't brought any serious compromises on power or performance, and even battery life is surprisingly strong.

It took a while, but Alienware has created a thin-and-light gaming laptop that's equal parts flashy, sexy and powerful. The m15 is legitimately portable without sacrificing the performance and endurance I've come to expect from the brand. And don't forget that lovely, vivacious display.

The Alienware m15 has almost everything going for it – a stylish lightweight design, the option of an ultra-smooth 144Hz display and enough power to blast through most games in Full HD at 60fps – but it's expensive, especially considering a lack of support for Nvdia's G-Sync technology.

Alienware's first ultra-thin laptop maintains the spirit of the original Alienware 15 R4 while propelling the series forward into the super-light gaming category. Of course, some sacrifices had to be made when moving to a smaller design, but it's mostly a success especially in terms of Turbo Boost performance and chassis rigidity.

There’s no question there are plenty of slimmer gaming laptop options out there. With its advanced thermal cooling technology, sleek gaming design, and various customizable options, the Alienware m15 definitely meets the criteria for a gaming laptop. While some of the configurations can be pricey, it does offer solid construction, great performance, and comfortable use.

In a vacuum, the m15 is impressive: it’s thinner and lighter than prior Alienware laptops, while still providing an excellent gaming experience and surprisingly good battery life when you’re not gaming. But it does not exist in a vacuum, and it’s not as thin, light, well-designed, or immersive as its competition. Even with a starting price that undercuts Razer, MSI, and others, the Alienware m15 doesn’t stand out.

The Alienware m15 OLED offers undeniable performance in a package that avoids the pitfalls of many gaming laptops: egregious size. It’s slim and light enough to go into an average backpack, but it’s potent enough to work hard and play hard. Throw in a decent battery and a stunning display, and it’s an excellent machine. The price of this model does hold it back some, though. While it’s cheaper than Razer’s upcoming Razer Blade with OLED display, that model with have some higher-end internals contributing to the price and DisplayHDR certification. Meanwhile, plenty of other gaming laptops can offer similar performance to the Alienware m15 at significantly lower prices with the only major trade-off being that they’ll have an LCD display with a high-refresh rate and 1080p resolution.

How do you make a great laptop even better? By adding a seriously beautiful OLED display to the slimmest laptop in Alienware's catalog and not skimping on high-powered components. This is easily one of the most satisfying gaming laptops I've tested this year. I just wish the fun lasted longer on a charge. If you want a slim gaming rig for less money, the Razer Blade 15's ($2,599) is $180 cheaper than the m15 and a faster SSD. But if you're looking for an incomparable viewing experience, the Alienware m15 OLED is the gaming laptop for you.

That said, this laptop doesn’t necessarily need to suffer for the sins of its parents. The OLED display is love-at-first-sight for me. Maybe not “I don't care that it costs $1,000 more than some laptops with comparable performance” love, but...well, depends what you care about. I could certainly see someone making the argument at least, and the m15’s internals perform well enough to do the display justice. After all, if you’re buying a screen that looks this damn good, you want whatever’s on it to look good too, right?

I still think the RTX 2070 Max-Q is in a weird spot, what with full-size GTX 1070 laptops remaining on the market, performing basically the same and usually priced much lower. And I think this particular Alienware m15 is in an even weirder spot, given there’s an m15 redesign already announced.

The Alienware m15 performs precisely in line with our expectations, that is, excellent frame rates while gaming and short render times in both Lightroom and Premiere Pro. Where it falters is in poor thermals, with the WASD keys getting as hot as 46 degrees. Regardless, the Alienware m15 makes for a great gaming system that will definitely turn heads.

Until we spend more time with the m15, we can't really judge how well it holds up - but on paper it has top specs for the form factor (except for limited RAM) and some seriously tempting display options. From the outside though, there's not much to complain about here. Those big ol' bezels are gone, the keyboard's stepped up, and the Legend design looks lush. This is exactly what an Alienware laptop should look like in 2019 - let's just hope it delivers on the promise.

Combined, all this makes the m15 and m17 exceptionally tempting gaming rigs indeed though prices will be predictably princely with both gaming notebooks started in on the ground floor with from USD1,500 and up. Stay tuned to Dell’s official website for more updates here.

If you've ever wanted the 17.3-inch Alienware Area-51m desktop replacement but wished it was smaller, then the 15.6-inch Alienware m15 R2 should fit the bill. Alienware’s been firing on all cylinders recently, and if you’re in the market for a laptop I’d absolutely recommend giving the lower-priced m15 R2’s a look. They’re beautiful, they’re durable, and as an added benefit? They come in black. After all, if you’re going to pay this much for a luxury machine, you don’t want it getting scratched the first time you take it out—no matter how futuristic the white version looks. Forget Dieter Rams. Richard Sapper had it right.

Alienware doesn’t shy away when it comes to going nuts with its aesthetic, while still establishing itself as a top-tier PC manufacturer. The new m15 certainly reflects those two aspects, and is certainly one to look out for should you be looking for a new laptop.

The Alienware m15 R2 feels like a luxury machine, and it's priced accordingly. If price is no object for you, I think you'll be very happy with Alienware's unique look and build. But if you're looking to get a more well-rounded laptop for your money, this isn't quite it.

Thanks to all of that extra-fast hardware, the Alienware m15 R2 turns in the best performance we've seen in a 15" notebook. The system's good looks, excellent performance, and gorgeous display option make for an extremely attractive package, too. If you're in the market for a well-endowed notebook to take to your dorm or your next LAN party, this Alienware notebook should be on your short list of systems to check out. For that reason, we bestow upon the m15 R2 Hot Hardware's Approved award.

We were immediately impressed by the Alienware m15 R2 when we first saw it at Computex 2019. Now having used it at home in the real world, it certainly didn't disappoint. Apart from a few minor niggles with battery life, a small main drive, and odd issues with footage capture, it's an absolute marvel of a machine. The 4K display option is absolutely stunning, HDR, ray tracing and eye-tracking are all added bonuses. The m15 R2 manages to perform well under pressure and without a typically obnoxious loud fan. Not that things don't get noisy if you really want them to of course. There's no doubt that on looks alone, both on-screen and off, the m15 R2 is well worth your investment. It will cost you a pretty penny though.

That said, it’s is one of the best choices out there if you are hooked on buying an OLED-screen gaming laptop. Even the likes of Asus and HP don’t have a powerful gaming laptop that has Tobii eye-tracking, customisable LED grilles, Intel Core i9 processor, 4K OLED display all in such a slim build. However, if you’re not a big fan of 4K OLED and Tobii eye-tracking hardware, Dell’s Alienware m15 might lose some of its shine to rivals who are offering an equally powerful alternative at a lower price.

It may look the same on the outside, but it's a different beast on the inside. CPU temperatures are much cooler now to address one of our biggest concerns about last year's Alienware m15 R2.
Source: Exhibit.tech
On its own, the Alienware M15 R3 is a great laptop. But when you take a look at the competition, you realise that Alienware is still a few steps behind. Currently, you can get a gaming laptop in a similar configuration at a far lower cost than the Alienware M15 R3. Alienware needs to take a few pages out of Dell’s XPS’ diary and focus on continual annual improvements. They have a great product, and just by sorting out a few issues like cooling and setting a competitive price will make help return the Alienware return to its former glory.

The Alienware m15 R3 is one of the better gaming laptops we’ve reviewed thus far. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s hard to complain given what you’re getting. You get powerful performance, improved thermals over its predecessor, excellent RAM and storage configuration, Wi-Fi 6, good array of ports, one of the best keyboards on a laptop with per-key RGB lighting, 144Hz refresh rate with options for a 300Hz refresh rate, and a useful Alienware software suite in a portable, yet attractive body.

Regardless, the m15 R3 is still comparatively pricey to your run-of-the-mill gaming laptop, which is something you will have to factor into your decision. However, this one aligns more closely to a boutique experience, with high quality construction, an excellent cooling solution and a head-turning aesthetic. All that said, the Alienware m15 R3 is fast, beautiful, and definitely worth a look, if you're in the market for a powerful gaming laptop.

All in all, the Alienware M15 R3 doesn’t suffer from too many fatal flaws. It’s just that the competition is getting that much better, and the likes of Razer and MSI one-up Alienware’s offering with thinner design, better battery performance, and more comprehensive upgradeability. If the company can make its next iteration go more toe-to-toe in those departments, it’ll be a real contender.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX502 held the crown as our top pick among premium gaming laptops for a long time, but the Alienware m15 R3 has proven a better value. It’s slightly less expensive than the Asus machine as configured, packing superior gaming performance, a newer processor, a more advanced display, and a unique design. We liked what the Razer Blade 15 and Acer Predator Triton 500 brought to the table, but the m15 R3 is a better deal, earning our Editors' Choice in this category.

Dell equips the Alienware m15 with Nvidia's new RTX 3000 GPUs in the R4 version. In our test configuration, the GeForce RTX 3070 shows what it can do at maximum TGP. The performance that can otherwise be found in this laptop will be revealed in our review.

The Alienware m15 R4 is a good gaming laptop with a compact form-factor. Dell put a high-powered GPU and a 300 Hz screen in a .8” thick chassis here, without skimping on the build quality, IO, and keyboard. At the same time, though, the battery life is terrible on this 300 Hz configuration that doesn't support Optimus, and the laptop runs fairly noisy and hot. These, and a couple of other small problems, make this m15 not the right choice for me, but it could be for you.

The new system isn't a run-out-and-buy-one temptation for owners of RTX 2080 laptops, but being able to more plausibly play with ray tracing might appeal to some. And those upgrading from an older gaming rig should be truly excited. This isn't a ground-breaking laptop in and of itself, but is still an improved—or should we say, Ampered up?—version of a system we can highly recommend.

Overall, the Alienware m15 R4 is an exceptional gaming notebook. Thanks to its top-notch cooling system with a pair of big blower fans and heat pipes galore, frame rate stability was just as blisteringly-fast at the end of our testing as it was at the start. That alone should be worth something to gamers on the go. Add that performance to Alienware's head-turning space age industrial design, Tobii eye tracking and 4K OLED display eye candy, and it's easy to see why we're giving this Alien our coveted Editor's Choice award.

Alienware and AMD make a good team as evidenced by the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition. The laptop delivered impressive overall performance and respectable gaming performance thanks to its AMD Ryzen processor and Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU. Plus, you get a beautiful display, powerful speakers and a comfy keyboard, in an all-too-stunning package. And while I’m pleased with the $1,779 price, I really would like to see this configuration with an RTX 3070 so it can give competing laptops more of a fight. As it stands, it can play games at playable frame rates, but it wasn’t blowing out the competition. And the battery life leaves much to be desired. If you’re looking for high frame rates, the $2,999 Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model is the way to go. If multitasking power and endurance is your thing, then the incredibly affordable $1,499 Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition is your laptop. But if you’re a fan of Alienware and AMD, the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition in its stylish glory is a great choice.

Old flagship gaming laptops never die, they just fade into the neutral zone. That's what's become of Alienware's m15 laptop line with the introduction of its thinner, more cutting-edge and far more expensive x15 line. The company seems to differentiate between the two by the display choices; it tags the Intel-based R6 models as the ones with "boundary-breaking visuals," which translates to... 1440p G-Sync display options. Along with the repositioning, Alienware brings back its first AMD CPU-based m15 in a l-o-o-o-ng time.

The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 gets plenty of things right considering its low price. On the inside, the RTX 3060 delivers solid mainstream gaming ability and the AMD Ryzen 5 5800H is a superb option for mainstream workloads and content-creation (if 74% Adobe RGB is ok), and the Alienware also serves up a good IPS display, a satisfying keyboard and bold, familiar aesthetics. In some areas, there are inevitable compromises. The trackpad and speakers both disappoint. External connectivity is good for gaming, but not for some workloads. Battery life is fine, if underwhelming, and this machine does get hot under duress. It’s thicker and heavier than plenty of 15.6in gaming laptops, too. These are not surprises, though, and they’re not issues that you’ll solve without lots more cash. The m15 R5 gets the most important things right making it an ideal candidate if you want a gaming laptop that won’t break the bank.

The M15 R5’s performance didn’t come into question during my testing. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of seeing the great battery life AMD’s processors bring, and it’s great that this GPU can hold its own next to pricier components like the RTX 3070. But as a whole, Alienware missed the landing when it comes to value. If you want more features for your money, even if it involves swapping some of the M15 R5’s power for a QHD screen and better portability, you should look elsewhere. The M15 R5 isn’t the jaw-dropping value that it needed to be (and that I’d hoped it would be) to steer everyone away from the 2021 gaming laptop frontrunner (so far), the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15.

The overall design and feature set of this system may be familiar, but we won't turn up our noses at its Ryzen-based improvements. Between its performance and specs, the m15 Ryzen Edition is a good value. Our test configuration combines very capable gaming performance, class-leading processing efficiency, and a high-refresh-rate screen, all wrapped up in an appealing and unique chassis.

In the end, it boils down to what a buyer values more: the overall package and premium aesthetic vs. raw specs and performance. There are some design choices here that contribute to a higher bottom line for the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5, including the higher 125 Watt thermal budget and the cooling system required to keep everything healthy and humming along at full speed. There is also plenty of flashy RGB-lit bling on hand, a high quality keyboard and premium materials, if these sort of trimmings are important to you. Buyers that hold raw performance-per-dollar as king might want to consider other options, but gamers that want to stand out in a crowd of boring black notebooks and still have plenty of high-powered gaming performance would do well to consider the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5.

Lisa Gade reviews the Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen edition 15.6” gaming laptop with their updated “Legend” design that we’ll also see in the just announced Alienware m15 R6 with Intel 11th gen CPUs. The R5 is available with AMD Zen 3 Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX 8-core processors and NVIDIA RTX 3060 and 3070 graphics. Dell offers it with full HD 165Hz, full HD 360Hz and QHD 240Hz fast refresh IPS displays and your choice of a traditional zone backlit keyboard and the CherryMX per key RGB mechanical keyboard. The Alienware has 2 RAM slots and socketed Wi-Fi 6 card, which is a great improvement over the past few generations that had those parts soldered. We cover benchmarks, thermals and noise, and compare it with the last gen R4, Asus ROG Strix and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro.

The Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 is certainly a powerful gaming machine but some of its missing elements make it feel like you’re missing the full experience. You get powerful performance, good RAM and storage configuration, Wi-Fi 6, HDMI 2.1, one of the best keyboards on a laptop with per-key RGB lighting, 165Hz refresh rate, and a useful Alienware software suite in a portable, yet attractive body. However, the reduction of ports is seen as an odd choice, CPU thermals could be improved, it is a little bit on the heavy side, and it is pricey as this variant starts at RM9,199. At the end of our Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 review, I award this with our Silver Pokdeward.

I had some high hopes for this model and feel a little let down. The extremely high CPU temps out of the box was probably the worst offender to me, that is, until I discovered that the GPU is not using all of its CUDA cores. The reduced IO is another thing that kind of threw me off, and the speakers got worse. But I can’t ignore some of the pros to this model. The Ryzen CPU is a nice one to have, as the battery life and performance are very good, and the Cherry MX keyboard is phenomenal! We'll get in-depth on all these down below.

Wait a minute, another m15? Yes, after the m15 R5 with a Ryzen processor now comes the m15 R6 with an Intel CPU, which brings the usual advantages and disadvantages (keyword Thunderbolt). Of course, the new Tiger Lake processor is more efficient and also faster than the Comet Lake predecessor in the R4, but Dell applies the emergency brakes in the 3D performance, and the R4 also still has something to say here.

The Alienware M15 R6 with the Tiger Lake update is mainly more efficient and frugal, but that doesn’t make it necessarily faster. While Alienware increased the CPU performance on its latest offering, the 3D performance has been throttled due to the lower TGP. This laptop uses a middle-weight version of the Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card, while most of its rivals and siblings including the Alienware M15 R4 have an RTX 3080 version that can suck up more juice when you let the fans spin faster. And it doesn’t have some of the niceties of the top Razer and Lenovo models. Also, you don’t get a particularly great touchpad, you’ll need an external gaming mouse. However, the Alienware M15 R6 will run all of today’s games at max settings beautifully, and it has a great keyboard, which should never be taken for granted. It would shine even brighter if the underlying plate were a little sturdier, but this keyboard is excellent for both work and play. In terms of competitors, the GIGABYTE AORUS 15P YD produces a marginally higher gaming performance while remaining cooler, but it also has higher consumption.

The Alienware M15 R6 is a laptop that had a lot to prove and it does so quite well. Heavy-duty gaming with sustained frame rates? Check. Excellent performance for day-to-day tasks? Check. Sumptuous visual quality? Check. Decent speakers? Check. A compelling keyboard layout? Check. The laptop has a very efficient thermal envelope that keeps the system cool and delivers quality gaming. My only gripe is the relatively low wattage draw of the RTX 3080 as compared to some other laptops which does kind of undermine the true potential of the GPU. And yeah, the screen can definitely be a shade brighter. By all means, if you are looking for a performance-centric laptop that handles graphical tasks with the utmost ease, then the Alienware M15 R6 is the machine for you.

The Alienware M15 R6 doesn't seem quite as dynamic as some of its rivals in a few areas. It uses a middle-weight version of the Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card when some have a version that can suck up more juice when you let the fans spin faster. And it lacks a few of the niceties of the top Razer and Lenovo models. You don't get a particularly great touchpad and look of the thing is stuck in a cautious middle-ground between gaming laptops that stick to the classic brash “gamer” style and something more serious and plain. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just our take on the style used here. However, the Alienware M15 R6 will tear through all of today's games beautifully and it has a great keyboard, which should never be undervalued. It would shine even brighter if the underlying plate were a little stiffer, but this keyboard is brilliant for both work and gaming.

The Dell Alienware M15 R7 is one of the best gaming machines you can buy. The combination of i7-12700H and RTX 3070 Ti, along with the 240Hz screen, makes for a pleasant and easy-on-the-eyes gaming experience. The trackpad area can get a bit warm during prolonged use, but this is not at the expense of performance. However, the Alienware M15 R7 lags behind the competition in terms of cooling. Of all the high-performance machines we tested, such as the Acer Predator Triton 500, Lenovo Legion 5i Pro, and ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15, the Alienware M15 R7 was the warmest, and we felt that the cooling was not adequate. Note that all of these laptops have the same specifications, so cooling becomes a big differentiator between them. If you are looking for a gaming laptop with a special design and RGB, the Alienware M15 R7 is a good option if you are using it with a keyboard. Alienware has always charged a small premium over the competition, but this time we feel that the premium is hard to justify. You can take a look at the ASUS TUF F15 and the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro, which offer similar performance but better thermal management.

There’s something special about owning an Alienware laptop. It’s a unique breed altogether and I was completely enamoured during my two weeks of testing this beast. However, I would be lying if I said that it is the perfect gaming laptop. It excels at raw gaming performance and even serves as a solid everyday computing machine. The space-age design is a head-turner and the fast display options make it worth the money. But there are minor quirks though. Battery life is underwhelming, the fans can get extremely loud, and the sheer weight questions its portability. It is also more expensive compared to similar offerings by Lenovo, ASUS and MSI. But if you can live with these issues, then the Alienware m15 R7 is worth your money and time.

Dell’s Alienware gaming laptops can be a very mixed bag. With an almost ridiculously huge range of models available, there’s always going to be some chaff that needs to be separated from the (admittedly more plentiful) wheat. Thankfully, the new Alienware M15 R7 sits firmly in the cereal grain category - a well-rounded 1080p gaming machine with a shiny 12th-gen Intel processor at its core. At first glance, the M15 R7 is the same as almost every other Alienware laptop released in recent years; an indented screen hinge, a long ring of RGB lighting along the rear edge, and that iconic alien-head logo illuminated in vivid blue. It’s a tried-and-tested design that we can’t blame Dell for sticking with - after all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That being said, at first glance there’s perhaps one area Dell could’ve improved things here - and it’s not actually on the laptop itself.

Powerful internals, connectivity options and a great display do steal the show for Dell Alienware m15 R7. However, quirks like sporadic throttling, loud fans and portability issues surely hurt the overall score. With the ever-rising competition from brands like Asus and MSI, Dell may have to step up a gear or two.

Sure, high-end gaming notebooks will still blow one away in terms of performance but now they are much lighter and more versatile. The Alienware m15 R7 brings power previously only available in the form factor of a desktop. Now, I can imagine a high-end gaming notebook with a high-refresh-rate display and serious computing power, all in a clamshell you can close and stuff in your backpack. It’s not cheap. But that’s okay. The m15 R7 is a tool for professional gamers and podcast editors, and it has to be built with their needs in mind.

The Alienware M15 R7 AMD Edition is a good gaming laptop at an excellent price. That’s a question of compromise, though: it is not the fastest, doesn’t have the best screen, or the largest amount of blinky LED lights. What it does have, however, is enough performance to run 3D shooters at a decent frame rate and a high refresh rate screen that shows them off well. And the starting price of $1199/£1,149 for a laptop with great gaming performance seals the deal.
