Reviews for the Alienware 18 Area-51
The redesigned Alienware 18 is proof that you don't need to be the thinnest or lightest to be sexy. Its thicker profile allows for both extra performance and features not found on most other gaming laptops including CherryMX keys, multiple PCIe5 SSD slots, and an oftentimes quieter gaming experience.

If you are even casually interested in PC gaming, you know about Alienware. You probably know that it's a brand that represents some of the fastest hardware out there, and yes, there's a price premium, but historically, you could rest assured that you were getting one of the fastest gaming PCs in the world. On the other hand, that aspect of the brand also was tarnished in years past, as some reviews found that some Alienware systems had certain design flaws that limited their potential. In other words, these new Alienware laptops are as close to flawless as we've seen in a gaming laptop in a long time. We do wish the 16-inch machine had an integrated Ethernet port, but that's easy enough to work around with a Thunderbolt docking station or even just a USB Ethernet adapter.

From every product I review, I learn a lot about the market, the customers, and where the industry is headed. That’s one of the things that keeps me excited about tech and what I do. A lot of you might be focused only on the price point of the Alienware 18 Area-51, but I would say that’s the wrong way to look at it. The true value of any product lies in what you do with it and how it benefits you. If you are a professional gamer, a developer, or into professional video editing, you need the right tools and having them can open up new opportunities to earn money and fame. I am sure no one is going to invest this much in a notebook just to check emails, browse websites, or watch YouTube. So the purpose has to be much more than that.

Ask a gamer about their idea of perfection and the answer would be this: A rich Steam library, ambient lighting, good audio levels and a large display for immersive gameplay. And the Alienware 18 Area-51, launched earlier this year, checks all these boxes. This is a complete gaming rig for anyone looking for a portable gaming setup without any compromises. However, it also comes with a hefty price tag. I have been testing the Alienware 18 Area-51 for both work and play for two weeks and have enjoyed the experience so far. With Nvidia’s RTX 5090 laptop GPU and Intel Core Ultra 9 processor, the laptop offers a truly premium experience for anyone looking for a new gaming beast. But its price, at Rs 4,95,990, might grab eyeballs. The real question now is- what do you get at a price where a full gaming PC is also an option? Read on to find out.

A new desktop replacement gaming laptop for 2025, the Alienware 18 Area-51 (also available in a 16” size) has a unique design with a liquid teal metal casing, RGB trackpad, optional Cherry MX mechanical keyboard and a 500 nit QHD+ 300Hz display. But the real reason to be interested is how quiet and cool this 4-fan laptop runs and how relatively affordable it is compared to some of the direct competition like the MSI Titan 18, Lenovo Legion 9i and Asus ROG Strix Scar 18. It’s available with your choice of Nvidia RTX 5060 thru 5090 full watt graphics and an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX (there is a base model with the Core Ultra 7 255HX). Other goodies include Thunderbolt 5, a Windows Hello IR camera and a compact GAN charger.

With such a high price tag, you'd expect Alienware to pack this laptop with all the best goodies. For the most part, it has, but the screen is disappointing, the unplugged performance is awful, and the keyboard feels cheap. At least this gives Dell plenty of scope to make next year's version better.

But even though a gaming laptop may not leave the home very often, a laptop is still supposed to be portable, even if it’s only once in a blue moon. Even if you aren’t moving it, it’s still a behemoth to fit on a desk or table, and that power brick is an obstacle in itself. This isn’t a dealbreaker, just something to keep in the back of your mind should you pick up your own: with great power comes great space commitment. And if I can nitpick for just a moment, I could do without the dedicated button for Microsoft’s Copilot. I get it, integrating AI features like this is a current trend. But, I can think of at least half a dozen other shortcuts I’d want taking up 1.5 letter keys’ worth of real estate instead (even on such a big keyboard). These are minor foibles, at the end of the day, and don’t offset all the power packed into this sleek form.

The Alienware 18 Area-51 is the most powerful gaming laptop we’ve tested, with serious performance alongside a classically over-the-top look, a sublime mechanical keyboard, and a decent 18-inch screen. It is horrendously expensive though, and comes with meagre battery life. The Medion Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate (RTX 5090) is virtually £1000 less, comes with a 16-inch Mini LED screen for punchier brightness and deeper blacks, as well as much better battery life, although it lacks the space-age design and ultimate power of Alienware’s choice. If you want a laptop that’s big and brash in every way, then the new 18 Area-51 is likely to tick a lot of boxes in a way that only Alienware really can. I usually set up my review laptops with everything I need to get work done and also some play. The Alienware 18 Area-51 was different. This is like getting a Ferrari. I felt like this wasn’t really a laptop I should do basic work on. I mean, I don’t need to test if web browsing and email work. Just look at the specs! So I set this up to game, and I did test basic video editing. I really don’t play heavy games, and I am pretty anti-social, so I don’t get involved in online gaming. My basic gaming list is simple games that aren’t massively heavy, and this laptop just breezed through those. I am not a pixel peeper or a frame rate snob. I’m not examining the performance as closely as those of you considering buying this laptop.

Be prepared to shell out the big bucks for the Alienware 18 Area-51. Prices start at $3,200 for the base model. My review unit retails for $4,450, although I have seen discounts on it. If you're looking for a lighter option, I suggest checking out the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. It houses similar hardware and weighs just 5.67 pounds. The MSI Raider 18 HX is another solid option that comes with a 4K display.
