Reviews for the Asus Strix Scar 18 G835LX
Asus has updated its gaming flagship Strix SCAR 18 with the Core Ultra 9 275HX, GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop and an outstanding mini LED display at 240 Hz. In addition, access to the device's components has been made much easier and there are plenty of lighting elements.
Together with the new RTX 5000 laptop GPUs, the new HX CPUs from AMD and Intel have arrived as well. We compare the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX with the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and compare not only the pure CPU performance but also the gaming performance in conjunction with the new RTX 5090 Laptop GPU.

ASUS continues to evolve the Strix lineup thoughtfully. The SCAR 18 2025 feels like a mature version of an already strong platform—more polished, more responsive, and visually stunning. The G18 is a refined option that trims just enough to meet the needs of most users without ever feeling stripped down. The MUX switch can occasionally freeze during transitions. Otherwise, this is as close to desktop-class power and polish as you can get in a laptop today.

Ultimately, I think both of the Strix Scar laptops I tested are worthwhile investments for those who want the ultimate all-in-one computer for gaming and everything else and are willing to pay a premium for it. The Strix Scar series doesn’t come cheap, with the Scar 16 ranging from $4,199 to $6,699 and the Scar 18 ranging from $4,499 to $6,999. (The Scar 16 config I tried wasn’t listed on Asus’ website, but the closest version was $4,999. Meanwhile, the Scar 18 config I tested was priced at $6,999.) That’s a ton of money to put down for a PC, but it’s also in line with similarly specced laptops from other brands and even some desktop options. For anyone who doesn’t want to drop around $5,000 on a desktop and another roughly $1,000 on a laptop or tablet for portable computing needs, gaming laptops like the Strix Scar are the obvious way to go, and that’s before getting into the cheaper options with lower-tier or older hardware.

The ROG Strix SCAR 16 and Strix Scar 18 are all new for 2025 with GPUs like the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090. In this review we put the 2024 vs 2025 gaming laptop performance in the spotlight with the RTX 4080 vs RTX 5080 and RTX 4090 vs RTX 5090....and the gaming results are interesting. But there's things like CPU performance, battery life, cooling and a lot more that need to be taken into account and that might be where these 2025 gaming laptops are some of the best....maybe.

It's always hard to write conclusions about systems like this because most people will never, ever have a machine this powerful. To put it bluntly, the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 18 excellent. The CPU is lightning fast in productivity tasks, the GPU is currently the fatest mobile graphics solution on the market, the screen is beautiful and vibrant, the keyboard is joyous to use, and the machine is easily upgradeable thanks to toolless internal bay access. The few quibbles we could make come down to a some design decisions that are completely justifiable. ASUS picked a proprietary power connector because you can't slam 380W through a USB Type-C port. The excess of decorative lighting on the machine is a bonus feature to a lot of users, even if it isn't everyone's taste.

The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 G835 (2025) marks a significant step forward, presenting a heavily redesigned powerhouse aimed squarely at gamers and creators who demand top-tier performance above all else. Its bold aesthetic, highlighted by the customisable AniMe Matrix lid and extensive RGB lighting, certainly makes a statement, though the finish does readily attract fingerprints. While undeniably large and heavy, the chassis feels reassuringly solid, exhibiting minimal flex despite its plastic construction, and houses an impressive array of components without compromise. Performance is undoubtedly the star here. Fueled by the potent Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and, in our test unit, the formidable NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, backed by blazing-fast RAID0 SSD storage, the SCAR 18 chews through demanding games and workloads with ease.

I'm not drawing conclusions on this 2025 Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 yet. So far, I appreciate the refreshed design, although ergonomics still leave plenty to be desired. The gains in performance are within 15-25% on the CPU side and more or less 10-15% on the GPU side over the previous Scar 18 generation, but the overall behavior is improved, thanks to the refined thermal module and power profiles. That 20+% price increase between generations, though...
