A strong alternative to Apple iPad Pro 13 falls short in area that matters most for tablets
The Oppo Pad 5 Pro positions itself as an exciting alternative in the XXL tablet segment, thanks to its powerful Qualcomm chipset and fantastic battery life. However, it is precisely the display, the central element of a premium tablet, that shows some weaknesses, which can noticeably affect everyday use - at least for display enthusiasts.
The Pad 5 Pro’s 13.2-inch panel looks impressive on paper. The display features a high refresh rate of 144 Hz, 12-bit color depth, and a brightness of around 900 cd/m², which also our measurements confirmed. It also offers completely PWM-free luminance control, providing a viewing experience that is easier on the eyes of sensitive users. This is a real advantage, especially when compared to OLED tablets like the MagicPad 4.
Large Android tablet without the contrast of an OLED display
But the initial enthusiasm for the LCD panel diminishes once its contrast characteristics are examined more closely. With a black level of 0.9 cd/m², the Pad 5 Pro’s display achieves a contrast ratio of only about 1,000:1. For a tablet in this price range, the black level is anything but ideal, and a look at the contrast ratio of its predecessor shows that better results are possible. Content appears somewhat washed out in dark scenes, and black visibly tends toward gray.
The Pad 5 Pro also falls short in terms of screen sharpness. While the flagship tablet from 2025 comes with a pixel density of over 300 PPI, the current generation is limited to 275 PPI.
Beyond the display, however, the Oppo tablet offers strong selling points, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and outstanding battery life in our Wi-Fi test.
