Evidence that Sony is exploring a PS5 PC cross-buy option is mounting. A dataminer stumbled on a graphic linking the platforms. PlayStation may enable buyers to launch PS5 games on Steam or its own marketplace. Another theory is that the graphic will signal crossplay on the rumored PS6 handheld.

Xbox offers Play Anywhere, which makes purchased games playable on consoles and PCs. With PlayStation also embracing multiple platforms, it may be considering a similar perk. Dataminer Amethxst found a curious graphic featuring a cross-buy label next to a PS5 PC logo. Fans are now debating whether Sony will launch an alternative PC marketplace to Steam and Epic Games.

There is skepticism over whether the images shared by the dataminer are legitimate. However, Amethxst convinced some naysayers with a follow-up video showing the discovery. Gamers are also split on what the logos mean for the future of PlayStation.

One possibility is that PS5 games bought on consoles will no longer require separate purchases on PCs. Buyers can select from many first-party PlayStation games on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Even so, there has been a period of console exclusivity for titles, including Death Stranding and now Death Stranding 2. Live-service games like Helldivers 2 are an exception, but Sony has otherwise avoided day-one PC launches.

If Sony expands its presence on desktops and laptops, it makes sense to introduce a PS Store-type marketplace. Otherwise, it would be trickier to offer PS5 PC cross-buy on third-party stores. Xbox has had years to evolve its Windows app, even if it trails Steam in popularity.

Cross-buy wouldn't be entirely new to PlayStation

PlayStation users have benefited from cross-play functionality in the past. Some PS3 and PS4 games permitted owners to access them on the PS Vita. That may again be the case with the rumored PS6 handheld.

Leaks suggest that the PS5’s low-power mode could enable games to perform adequately on the Canis. On the other hand, if compatibility is widespread, it would negate the need for a graphic.

As it stands, there is no confirmation that PlayStation Play Anywhere will become a reality. That said, Nintendo seems to be the only company still committed to first-party exclusivity.
