Samsung: Samsung unveils new Orion dual core ARM-based CPU

The Orion chip will be HD video capable and will also have a triple display controller

Samsung is not new in manufacturing processors and is relatively experienced in low power, high performance ARM-based chips for smartphones and other mobile devices. The 1GHz Hummingbird CPU is Samsung’s flagship processor and is considered to be one of the fastest in the market. And now, Samsung has introduced a new 1GHz dual core chip called the Orion.

The Samsung Orion is an ARM Cortex A9-based chip and uses a 45nm processor technology. The new processor boasts of support for playing HD video as well as recording video at 1080p resolution. Samsung mentions that the Orion chip will perform 5 times better than the existing Samsung processors when it comes to 3D graphics. Additionally, the chip also has a triple display controller, thus enabling it to handle two on-board displays (if the device has two displays) and also drive another external display.

Reportedly, Samsung will start supplying the Orion chips to select manufacturers toward the end of 2010 while mass production will probably begin in the first half of 2011.
