The Ayaneo Pocket S2 arrived a few weeks ago on Indiegogo to replace the Pocket S with numerous hardware upgrades. While initial pre-orders are not expected to begin shipping until next month, ETA Prime, Retro Game Corps and TechDweeb have already been putting review units through their paces.
To recap, Ayaneo claimed that it had overhauled its cooling system for the Pocket S2. Often a sore point in Pocket S reviews, the company's original cooling system was quickly overwhelmed by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1. According to Russ from Retro Game Corps, he has experienced no such issues with the Pocket S2.
In fact, the switch to a Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 allows the new handheld to hit much higher performance levels than the Pocket S or other powerful Android gaming handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 5 (curr. $259 on Amazon). Apparently, the Pocket S2 can emulate 6th generation home consoles like the PlayStation 2 at 1440p while remaining in its Balanced performance mode with its fan disabled for the most part.
Meanwhile, Wii U emulation varies between 720p and 1080p, depending on the game chosen. On top of that, the Pocket S2 can even emulate Super Mario Odyssey, although only with its Max performance mode enabled. Game streaming is said to be excellent, too. Unfortunately, Ayaneo's latest Android handheld is not free of issues at this stage. Supposedly, enabling Gaming mode can lock games to 30 FPS after a short time, regardless of how hot the device is.
