Fiido Kidz debuts as world's first electric bike with parental controls
Fiido argues that there is no reason why a child's first bike should not be an e-bike in 2024, as they can negate the need for training wheels due to their design. Then again, the company has also apparently observed that some other OEMs in this market could make their models safer, as they have throttles under full control of the kid in question from the second they set off.
The new bike has a throttle, too - however, parents/guardians should be able to restrict access to the feature in their Fiido smartphone app. Pulse Mode, the Kidz' equivalent of pedal assist that kicks in "for a few seconds" when the rider has been able to work up enough pushing power, thereby potentially helping them learn to keep their balance, can also be toggled on and off in the same way.
Furthermore, the bike is rated for a variable top speed of 5-12 kilometers per hour (km/h, or 3.1-7.4 miles per hour), which can also be set in the app, as with the power-on or -off status. It is also equipped with "power cut-off" drum brakes.
On that note, Fiido is confident that the Kidz can also double as a conventional push-bike with a "one-finger" total mass of 7.2 kilograms or 15.9lb despite its "sturdy" aluminum construction. Similarly, its toothed motor and clutch is touted to minimize resistance, even for users of the minimum recommended age for the bike (2 years) in any of the bike's 3 modes.
Fiido estimates that the Kidz' "innovative" battery will last for about 4 hours per charge, although that drops to 1-2 hours under its "maximum payload", which is 80 kilograms (kg, or 176.4 lbs)...you know, just in case an adult wants to be the one to ride it for some reason.
Accordingly, the Kidz is touted as the ideal way to grow up with confidence with any two-wheeler in the increasingly e-bike-dominated world envisaged by OEMs such as Fiido. It is currently available in a two-tone "kid-friendly" (and, possibly more importantly, highly visible) finish at a full price of $599, currently cut down to $399 for a limited time.
