Yoniq Portal handheld is a DualShock 2 controller with a display

When the first teaser image of Yoniq's dual-screen handheld first surfaced, it also showed a second device that looked like a DualShock 2 controller with a display between the grips. It turns out that the handheld, which is called the Yoniq Portal, is real, and there's a hands-on video of it.

The video, which was shared on X by Retro Dodo, shows the Yoniq Portal on display at Gamescom. The handheld is greatly reminiscent of the PlayStation 2's controller, such that it even retains the signature icons for the action buttons. The display is angled towards the user and the video shows there's a charging port at the bottom. It wouldn't be far-fetched to say that this is what the PlayStation Portal (available on Amazon for $249) might have looked if it was made in the PS2 era.

There are no technical specifications available yet, but a tent card next to the Yoniq Portal says the handheld is powered by Pantas, which is Yoniq's proprietary software. Retro Dodo says that it is likely a custom UI on top of Android. It also says the display seems to be 4.5-inches in size.

The card also mentions some other features which don't make much sense, either due to poor translation or it could just be Yoniq stringing up words together such as “handheld optimised performance”, “AI performance scheduling”, “cross platform cloud connectivity”, and “professional gamepad adjustment”.

The Yoniq Portal is shown running World Soccer: Winning Eleven 8 a.k.a. Pro Evolution Soccer 4, which was released in 2004. Considering the age of the game, the Yoniq Portal will probably do no more than emulate old devices. Nevertheless, its design seems interesting enough to make it stand out from rival handhelds.
