Is it fair to compare a smartphone with a 7,000mAh battery with one with a 3,692mAh battery? Probably not, so a basic Xiaomi 17 vs. iPhone 17 battery life test would have a fairly predictable outcome. However, Xiaomi's latest promo video on the Chinese platform Weibo takes this comparison to the extreme and makes it a bit more interesting. After about 5.6 hours, when the iPhone drops to just 20 percent battery, a 5,000mAh MagSafe battery is attached to the back of Apple’s latest smartphone.
7,000mAh beat out theoretical 8,692mAh
This gives the iPhone 17 a theoretical total capacity of 8,692mAh (3,692mAh + 5,000mAh), although that number is rather unrealistic. Due to loss during magnetic wireless charging, a significant part of the 5,000mAh cannot actually be used. Around one-third is probably lost, given the well-known inefficiency of wireless charging. Even so, it’s a disappointing outcome for Apple fans when the test ends after just 12 hours and 14 minutes for the iPhone 17. At that point, the Xiaomi 17 still has 26% battery remaining.
According to Xiaomi, the test was conducted with the screen brightness set to 150 nits, airplane mode enabled, and a kind of image loop running in a social media app, which is not exactly a realistic scenario. Apple officially claims up to 30 hours of battery life for the iPhone 17 when playing video, though that is a theoretical number as well. Since this is a promo video from Xiaomi, the results should be taken with a grain of salt. While the iPhone 17 is already available, the Xiaomi 17 with a 7,000mAh battery can only be imported to Europe and North America. The global version will unfortunately come with a smaller battery.
