The Xiaomi Mix 5 and Xiaomi 12 Ultra rollercoasters continue. Over the past few months, conflicting reports have surfaced about Xiaomi's plans for the two premium devices, and the latest yet turns it all on its head.
According to new information, the Xiaomi Mix 5 could be dead and replaced entirely with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. After the release of the Xiaomi 12 series in China, word on the grapevine indicated that Xiaomi would not release a Xiaomi 12 Ultra and would replace it with the Xiaomi Mix 5 series. Sometime after, information then claimed that the company would release both phones, with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra bearing the internal designation "L2s". In a complete 180, it now appears that the Xiaomi Mix 5 series is dead.
Xiaomi, again, chooses to take the most convoluted route in its product development. The death of the Mix 5 series makes sense, though, as it would have shared much of its hardware with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra and taken a similar space on the market. While Xiaomi has shown no hesitation to cannibalize its own sales in the mid-range segment, the flagship space requires a bit more finesse. The relatively uninspiring reception of the Mi Mix 4 may have been a factor as well.
Specific details of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra remain elusive but the rumor mill touts a WQHD+ AMOLED, a 50 MP IMX800 main camera, and a periscope zoom lens. Going by recent information from China, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra could launch in late June alongside the Mix Fold 2.
