Xiaomi usually launches its products in India after being unveiled in China, especially affordable offerings like the Redmi Note series. However, that formula seems to have been inverted when high-end smartphones are involved. In this instance, the Xiaomi 12 Pro was unveiled in China late last year, followed by a global launch. Xiaomi has confirmed that it will arrive in India on April 27.
It is unclear if Xiaomi plans to bring the entire Xiaomi 12 series to India or just the high-end Xiaomi 12 Pro. The promotional material on Xiaomi's website suggests that it could be the latter, as there are no mentions of the vanilla Xiaomi 12 and the Xiaomi 12X. Limited availability could be one of the reasons for the smartphones' omission. Furthermore, they could potentially cannibalize Xiaomi's existing product stack, although that has rarely stopped the OEM before.
After effectively decimating India's entry-level and mid-range smartphone market, Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi have been trying hard to establish a foothold in the lucrative high-end segment. However, they've found limited success, as people gravitate towards more established players like Samsung and Apple, especially when one has to fork out upwards of US$1,000 for a smartphone. Only time will tell if the Xiaomi 12 Pro will be any better off than the devices that came before it.
