A Xiaomi executive recently re-raised hype for a potential 12 Ultra super-flagship phone, despite prior rumors that it would be replaced by the Mix 5 Pro in 2022. Now, the same individual has referenced another, similarly-named upcoming device, giving rise to speculation that it will be a new Ultra by a new name.

The fate of a successor for the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has been a source of intense uncertainty throughout late 2021 and early 2022. The potential for its launch has been endorsed, then debunked, then reinstated again as the rumor mill ground on. Now, the latest word is that the 12-series flagship will in fact debut shortly, just under a different name.

The source of the latest leak in favor of the 12 Ultra's existence, the Xiaomi manager Wang Teng, has once again strongly hinted that this device will launch, in the form of Xiaomi's 2022 "Super Cup". However, the executive has now intimated that it will not do so under the product name as expected.

This new putative teaser has come in the form of what looks like a spoof of a video interview in which Wang Teng mentions this new moniker (12U) alongside that of one more certain to launch (Redmi K50). Then again, the executive also indicated that the new name is to be confimed during a subsequent real-life streamed conference.

Therefore, the 12 Ultra might indeed see a re-brand in 2022, as did the 12 and 12 Pro before it. The prospect does indeed make some sense in light of the new 12X variant: its super-premium counterpart might have also been assigned a new and snappier name going forward.
