Stable MIUI 12 and Android 10 updates for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 may arrive simultaneously after the Dragon Boat Festival
The Redmi Note 8 is yet to receive an OS upgrade, despite being launched running Android 9.0 Pie in October 2019. The device has recently received a new MIUI 11 update, but this is once again another Android 9.0 Pie-based version of Xiaomi's in-house OS. An Android 10-based China beta build has been published online, but the wait for a stable Android 10 update continues.
Xiaomi has included the Redmi Note 8 in Round 2 of its MIUI 12 release schedule, beta registrations for which it is currently accepting. A Super moderator of the Mi Community has informed fans that they must wait until "after the holidays" before the Redmi Note 8 receives MIUI 12, which likely means after the Dragon Boat Festival. This has led Piunikaweb to posit that the Android 10 and MIUI 12 upgrade could happen simultaneously. If this is the case, then we would expect the next update for the Redmi Note 8 to be a large one as it will contain files to upgrade the device not only to MIUI 12 but also Android 10.
However, Xiaomi typically upgrades the China branch of MIUI first, with the global, European, Indian and Russian branches lagging behind by anywhere from a few days to over a month. Hence, if Xiaomi starts upgrading the Redmi Note 8 to Android 10 and MIUI 12 next month, then it could be August or even early September before the update reaches all regions. If you cannot wait any longer for Android 10 to land on your Redmi Note 8, then you could flash a custom ROM like LineageOS or Pixel Experience. These can be found on XDA Developers, although please note that you must have unlocked the bootloader of your device and flashed TWRP before you install a custom ROM.
