The selection of portable screens currently available on Amazon is extensive. However, these are generally limited in size to fit in a backpack, bag or suitcase. Foldable screens are one way of getting around this limitation. Splay takes a different approach with the Max, which is a very portable monitor that offers a screen diagonal of 35 inches. The weight is specified as 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds).
A combination of a foldable fabric screen and a projector makes Splay Max possible. How it works is rather simple: the fabric is unfolded, set up as a screen and the projector casts the image onto the screen, which is basically no different from the principle of rear projection. The resolution is specified as 1,920 x 1,080 and the brightness as 600 cd/m². Screen reflections are said to be absent. The Splay Max can also be used without the display unit as a projector, allowing for projections up to 80 inches in size on a suitable surface and with a maximum brightness of 285 lumens. Keystone correction is said to be at least partially automatic.
Splay Max runs on a battery and has no operating system, but it can be connected to a TV stick via HDMI. Lastly, the price tag is a little steep: As part of the crowdfunding campaign, backers have to contribute at least around $744 for one unit, plus shipping costs. Delivery is planned for November. As this is a high-risk crowdfunding campaign, there is no guarantee that the product will actually make it to market.
