Towerborne is a cooperative action RPG developed by Stoic, the studio behind The Banner Saga, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It entered Early Access on September 10, 2024, with a full release planned for 2025. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story centers on the tower fortress Belfry, where humanity seeks refuge from dark, supernatural forces. Players take on the role of an "Ace" – a warrior resurrected with mysterious powers – tasked with exploring the ravaged lands, rescuing survivors and confronting a looming mystical threat.
Blending side-scrolling combat with RPG elements, loot and co-op gameplay for up to four participants (online or locally), Towerborne lets players choose from a variety of weapons, such as hammers, shields, daggers or bare fists, and pair them with unique Umbra companions that offer offensive or support abilities depending on their type. Missions and new regions are unlocked via a strategic world map, while gear is managed and upgraded within the Belfry fortress.
Reviews: Fun combat and solid co-op, but technical issues remain
Steam reviews highlight Towerborne for its smooth, enjoyable combat, diverse weapon classes and strong co-op gameplay. Players also praise the stylish art direction as well as the rewarding loot and progression systems. However, criticisms include limited content – such as a small variety of enemies and missions – and technical issues like bugs and unstable matchmaking. Given its Early Access status, many view these as typical growing pains. So far, the action RPG has accumulated around 700 reviews on Steam, with 78% rated positive.
Free to play on Steam for a limited time
Although Towerborne is set to launch as a free-to-play title, its Early Access version currently costs around $25. However, a free trial is available until June 19, allowing players to try the action RPG at no cost. Those who wish to continue can take advantage of a 25% discount until June 24, reducing the Early Access price to approximately $19.
