Steam is once again offering a free weekend for gamers to try out a new title. This time, it's Barony – a challenging first-person roguelike dungeon crawler known for its depth and difficulty. After the free trial ends, the game will remain on sale at 50% off for a few more days.

Barony is a first-person roguelike dungeon crawler with a pixelated voxel style, developed by Turning Wheel LLC and released in June 2015. Players step into the shoes of a hero tasked with saving the once-peaceful village of Hamlet, now under the control of the evil Baron Herx, who has returned as an undead lich. His minions and undead forces maintain a tight grip on the land. The goal: venture into his sprawling dungeon, confront terrifying horrors of stone and blood, and liberate Hamlet by putting an end to Herx’s reign once and for all.

At the core of Barony’s gameplay are procedurally generated dungeons, permadeath, deadly traps and formidable bosses. Players can choose from 13 unique classes, ranging from classic roles like warrior and mage to more unconventional ones like the Sexton or Joker. Progress is driven by gear, spells, loot and permanent RPG stats. The game supports solo play as well as co-op for up to four players, both locally and online.

Reviews: Challenging, replayable – but technically outdated

Steam users describe Barony as a challenging roguelike with real depth and strong replay value. The active development team is also praised for frequent updates and robust mod support. Still, the game isn’t without flaws. Its steep difficulty curve often overwhelms newcomers within minutes and some mechanics feel unbalanced and overly dependent on luck. Additionally, the dated visuals and clunky user interface can detract from the overall experience.

Despite some minor criticisms, Barony enjoys "Very Positive" feedback on Steam. Of more than 7,000 user reviews, 92% are positive. On Metacritic, the reception is slightly more reserved, with users giving it a score of 7.2. A critic-assigned Metascore is currently not available.

Free weekend on Steam

Barony is usually priced at around $20 on Steam, but from June 13 to 15, players can try it out for free. If you enjoy the game, it’s available at half price – around $10 – until June 19. According to SteamDB, previous sales have offered much steeper discounts, sometimes as high as 85%.
