The DXOMARK Audio overall score of 72 for the Samsung Galaxy S22+ (Exynos) is derived from its Playback and Recording scores and their respective sub-scores. While the overall score of the Galaxy S22+ (Exynos) is a point higher than the S22 Ultra (Exynos), and the S22 (Exynos), the performance of the S22+ gained some points in the recording subscore over the Ultra, particularly in timbre, mainly because of a better performance when recording loud environments such as an electronic concert. n playback, the S22+ (Exynos) matched the performance of the S22 Ultra (Exynos) in timbre, spatial and volume, mainly because of the Ultra’s better wideness performance and low-end extension. The S22+ (Exynos) also gained a couple of points over the Ultra version in artifacts. Since the devices have the same audio specifications and most of the scores are so close and within our margin of error, we direct you to the S22 Ultra (Exynos) Audio test results for the full details on the audio performance of the Galaxy S22+ (Exynos).

All that said, despite its positives, the Galaxy S22 Plus is in danger of falling out of the limelight. With the S22 Ultra catching admiring glances and the regular S22 shaping up to be a great-value option, the Plus is a bit of an oddity. Sitting slap bang in the middle of the range in terms of price, it’s a decent option, but it doesn’t really stand apart from the rest, either. The bigger screen is a nice bonus, as is the chunkier battery, but sadly I can’t see many of these flying off the shelves. After all, if you’re already prepared to pay flagship-sized sums on a new phone, you’d be better off spending the extra cash and picking up the S22 Ultra instead. On the flip side, if money is a bit tight, the regular S22 ought to be your go-to upgrade. In closing, the S22 Plus is no doubt a lovely handset, but it continues to be a bit of an enigma. Samsung should be doing more to separate the middle child from the rest of the family next year, or perhaps even consider scrapping it altogether.

When it comes to building flagship phones, some things come effortlessly to Samsung: killer displays, elegant design paired with superb build quality, and intuitive, feature-packed software. As such, you know you're not going to be let down when you pick up a Galaxy S phone. As highlighted by the likes of the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 and, to a lesser extent, the camera system on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the South Korean company doesn't always get things quite right, however, and the S22+ undoubtedly has its cracks. Battery life is fine, but it lags behind the competition, while the promise of improved fast charging fails to deliver any meaningful benefit to users. The new camera system clearly has potential too, but imaging issues already addressed on last year's S series seem to have inexplicably re-emerged on the S22+, highlighting problem areas that users shouldn't have to deal with on a device at this price point.

With a DXOMARK Camera score of 126 the Samsung Galaxy S22+ (Exynos) camera does an excellent job, but it lands in the middle of the Ultra-Premium segment that it is in. Compared to last year’s S21+, the new device offers significant improvements in most areas. The results of the S22+ (Exynos) were identical to those of the S22 (Exynos), and we direct you to the Galaxy S22 (Exynos) Camera test for a more in-depth look into the device’s camera performance.

The Galaxy S22 Plus seems like a very promising flagship phone, given its attractive design, promising cameras, and the very latest silicon chips onboard. We’re going to need more time with the phone to give you our final verdict, but from what we’ve seen so far the device seems to have the ability to pick up from where the Galaxy S21 Plus started off.

Out of the three Galaxy S22 models to arrive, we feel the S22+ fits into that sweet spot the best out of the lot. It's slightly smaller than the S21+ from before, adding refinement to the familiar design. That it's got a flat screen, not a curved one like the S22 Ultra, and doesn't dabble in S Pen stylus integration - a feature that we're not convinced all S series users will want anyway (that's what the Note was for) - seems all the more contemporary for a 2022 arrival. And while the Plus' cameras are identical to the smaller S22's setup, the added battery life of the bigger model will bring that little more assurance. All in all, then, while the generation to generation updates are unremarkable, the Samsung Galaxy S22+ might well be pick of the 2022 bunch - and an example of a top drawer Android flagship where refinement rather than reinvention can go a long way.

With the S22 Ultra catching admiring glances and the regular S22 shaping up to be a great-value option, the S22 Plus is a bit of an oddity. Sitting slap bang in the middle in terms of price, it doesn’t really stand apart, either, and it might be difficult to earn a recommendation when it eventually arrives on my desk for review. In the meantime, however, I’m going to try my best to remain cautiously optimistic. If there’s a big boost to battery life, then it could well be worth it for that alone. The Galaxy S22 Plus is available to preorder from today, with a release date scheduled for 11 March. Prices start at £949 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB variant costing £999.

The S22 and S22 Plus should be reliably good phones with premium design, great screens and nippy internals. Time will tell just how good their new camera system is, and whether the phones can hold their own against the 108MP behemoth – the S22 Ultra, or other champs like the iPhone 13 Pro and Pixel 6. Early impressions are unabashedly positive for all three of Samsung’s S22 smartphones, with the S22 in particular set to be the slim phone lover’s choice weighing just 168g and measuring 7.6mm thin. Meanwhile, the S22 Plus is a OnePlus 9 Pro competitor, with its larger screen and sub-£1,000 price, while the Ultra, which you can read about in our S22 Ultra hands-on, delivers S Pen input, even bigger visuals, and a top-tier camera system.
