As you can probably tell from the length of this review, there’s a heck of a lot to talk about when it comes to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung’s Note but not a Note, this year’s top-end S-series flagship stands well apart from its cheaper siblings, and it’s clear that you’re getting an awful lot more for the added cost. But, of course, that cost is a particularly potent pain point. Starting at £1,149 for the 128GB model and running all the way up to £1,499 for 1TB of storage, the S22 Ultra is the priciest (non-folding) flagship on the market. It’s £100 more than the already expensive iPhone 13 Pro Max, after all, so it really ought to be practically flawless to justify the increased expense. Except it does stumble a little along the way. The performance improvements aren’t quite as big as I would have liked and the battery life decrease is a bit worrisome. If you’ve still got last year’s S21 Ultra in your hands, you might want to hold on to it for at least a little while longer. However, if you’re looking for the very best that Android can muster and are blessed with deep pockets, you can’t do any better than the S22 Ultra.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s latest flagship and comes with multiple upgrades over its predecessor, like a built-in S pen and bigger sensors to improve night photography. It sports a 6.8″ display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung says the new chipset, the Exynos 2200 (4 nm) in Europe, is its fastest ever. On the audio front, the device has two speakers producing “surround sound with Dolby Atmos technology.” Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are included. As for recording, S22 Ultra has Zoom-in MIC (Audio zoom), which Samsung describes as “an audio recording function that focuses on the direction of interest using a combination of 3 built-in MICs while video recording.” We put the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) through our rigorous DXOMARK Audio test suite to measure its performance both at recording sound using its built-in microphones, and at playing audio back through its speakers. In this review, we will break down how it fared in a variety of tests and several common use cases.

Samsung’s latest flagship appeared with very promising specs, including screen brightness claimed to reach 1750 cd/m2, an adaptive frame rate, and a Vision Booster feature that adjusts the display tone mapping to ambient lighting conditions. We compared the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) with its predecessor, the S21 Ultra 5G (Exynos), and with two of its principal competitors, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max and the OnePlus 9 Pro. So what did DXOMARK engineers find during testing? Well, first of all, yes, the S22 Ultra (Exynos) display measured 1777 cd/m2 in our brightness tests — the brightest smartphone display ever — and thanks to this, it shows strong improvement in readability under sunlight. And second, Samsung achieves the new top video score thanks to good brightness, proper tone mapping, and good color rendering. As for drawbacks, the new device’s default brightness is too low under indoor and shady outdoor conditions; and even though the Vision Booster feature makes detail easier to see in some images viewed under sunlight, it adversely impacts the color rendering in others.

The brand new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) is a phone of superlatives. Samsung says the Exynos 2200 chipset is its fastest ever and the 6.8-inch display is its brightest display to date. The S22 Ultra is also the first S-series model to come with a built-in S-Pen, a feature that has previously been exclusive to the Note series. In the camera array, the primary module uses a 108MP sensor, which in low light combines nine pixels into one for a very large 2.4μm pixel size. There is also a 12MP ultra-wide camera and two dedicated tele cameras. Medium-range tele duties are taken over by a 3x lens with 10MP resolution. For more extreme tele magnifications, a 10x periscope-style module is available. The primary camera also features an ultra-low reflection nano-coating, which is designed to reduce lens flare. In video mode, the S22 Ultra is capable of recording 8K footage at 24 frames per second or 4K resolution files at up to 60 fps. The specs surely look impressive. Let’s see how they translate into real-life images and have a look at the DXOMARK Camera test results.

The S22 Ultra is as good as it's ever been, but that doesn't necessarily make it better than the S21 Ultra. It has a lot of great features, fantastic cameras and a deliciously good screen, but there's a distinct lack of pizazz with this update. That might be down to the resurgence of quality in the iPhone and the very fun Pixel 6, both of which make the S22 seem a little dull by comparison. It is also ultra-pricy at £1,149. However, the argument here is that you don't get these specs anywhere else; only the Fold3 is bigger and that hasn't got the same battery power or anywhere near the camera quality found here. What's more, this is the closest you'll get to a Galaxy Note anytime soon. If you want the very best then this is, by any measure, a truly noteworthy Ultra.

Samsung’s 2022 flagship phone Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) features impressive specs all around, including an Exynos 2200 chipset, a large 6.8-inch display and a main camera with dual-tele lenses. The front camera fits right in and with a 40MP sensor, autofocus and 4K video recording at 60 frames per second offers more enticing technical specs than many competitors. Read on to find out how the Samsung’s 2022 Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) performed in the DXOMARK Selfie test.

Comparing the (US) Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 & (UK) Exynos 2200 Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphones - which is faster, lasts longer, and has the better camera?

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) comes with amazing specifications for a flagship. But the large 5000 mAh battery provides the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) with average autonomy for its price range, and at the expense of battery efficiency. The device’s new 45W charger does a good job, but the improvement overall is underwhelming, with only a 5-minute gain to a full charge, compared with the 25W charger’s performance. When compared against other devices in our database, the autonomy score is weak for the S22 Ultra (Exynos) because of its performance, particularly at night, in our Typical Usage Scenarios. The overall charging performance, however, was good.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the perfect upgrade for existing Galaxy Note users, offering the same design language, a built-in S Pen slot and more. Throw in flagship specs including a WQHD+ 120Hz display, one of the best camera setups around and Samsung's Exynos 2200 and you've got a very tempting, but also very premium, smartphone.

The S22 Ultra should really be called a Galaxy Note. It’s a giant phone for power users, offering unrivalled features, from the fantastic camera with more optical zoom than any other to the long battery life, stunning display and powerful built-in S Pen stylus. However, it is the stylus that may render the phone a bit of a niche product. Samsung’s most devoted fans were Note buyers who will be very happy, as the S22 Ultra provides a best-in-class writing and drawing experience. But many people will probably never remove the stylus from its dock. It is really good to see Samsung using recycled material in a phone for the first time, and providing at least five years of software updates from release, making it the longest-lasting Android available. It is not quite as exciting as some of the new breed of folding phones. But the S22 Ultra is the best Android superphone money can buy and will take some beating this year.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is jam-packed. We’ve only scratched the surface in this review – touching on highlights and core specs, but if you start using the phone you’ll see for yourself, it’s bursting with features. It also checks all our smartphone boxes: Stunning screen? Check. Rich styling? Check. Fancy pen? Check. Class-leading camera… and the list goes on. There’s no getting around the fact the S22 Ultra isn’t cheap, starting at £1,149 and climbing all the way up to £1499, it’s even pricier than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. That said, if you’re an Android fan, a lover of tech and can justify the cost, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most fully-featured Android phone of 2022.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is everything you'd expect from a flagship smartphone and more. New features like the slot for the S Pen along with the latest hardware make this perfect for productivity, while the new camera features make for incredible photos and videos. It's very expensive which will put some people off, but if you're willing to spend the money, you won't regret it.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G – 489 000 forint. A nálunk járt változat (8 GB/128 GB) ennyibe kerül.

If you’ve been lamenting Samsung’s decision to kill the Note series then the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is well and truly its spiritual successor. From the rounded design to the internal S Pen, this is a Note phone in all but name, It’s a truly specced-up powerhouse of a phone. The camera has some tempting tech that I hope isn’t influenced too much by the AI while the screen is a joy to behold.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra stands apart from the rest of the S22 series as something altogether different. Indeed, its integration of an S Pen stylus, not to mention its whole visual style, sort of makes it like the Note that never was. Many will see that as a positive, especially if you're all about the pen, but others may want the larger screen real-estate and curved edge visual appeal and will never use the S Pen's skills at any point. So it's not necessarily going to be the device for all. That said, we think the design - with a reduction in lens protrusion - is a really great visual evolution, while other key features - such as the moderate enhancements to the main camera, plus some shooting modes - show that this isn't a complete reinvention of the series, it's a well-considered refinement.

Alongside the new S22 phones, Samsung also unveiled a new line of tablet computers. Each of the new Galaxy Tab S8 devices has Android 12, the latest chips, optional 5G and the S Pen stylus included in the box. The Tab S8 and S8+ have 11in and 12.4in screens respectively, but it is the new S8 Ultra that stands out with its big 14.6in display, making it Samsung’s largest tablet yet. The machines are designed for entertainment, with high-resolution screens and four Dolby Atmos speakers, but also productivity, with a range of keyboard case accessories and Samsung’s DeX software that turns the tablet into a laptop-like experience.
