The free-to-play Overwatch Switch 2 upgrade has arrived, but many players report horrific performance. Frame rates top out at 30 fps, well below the 60 fps that Blizzard promised. With blurriness and input lag also issues, the publisher plans to release a patch to address the shortcomings.

Offering boosted specs, many Switch 2 games produce visuals more comparable to other platforms. Unfortunately, Blizzard’s latest attempt to support the console is off to a disastrous start. The free-to-play Overwatch Switch 2 upgrade is only running at half the advertised frame rate. Blizzard is now pledging to patch the disappointing performance.

This Switch 2 shooter misses the mark

Before its name change, Overwatch 2 launched on the original Switch via early access in 2022. Still, the graphics were lackluster compared to the experience on the PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC. The update for the newer Nintendo system, among other enhancements, aimed for 60 fps visuals in docked and handheld modes.

Sadly, as Season 2 launches, the shooter game hasn't come close to meeting fans' expectations. The frame rate remains locked at 30 fps, and combatants report that image clarity is now worse. At the moment, there is confusion as to whether the publisher even uploaded the correct version to the eShop.

There isn’t much about the Overwatch Switch 2 upgrade that seems like an improvement. However, some players believe they are downloading a new release. Reddit posters point out that HD Rumble works, and the interface references a new control scheme. DerpyChap thinks it’s also rendering visuals at a higher resolution, but not all gamers agree.

Help is on the way for Overwatch

While Blizzard hasn’t provided an explanation, it has responded to complaints on its official forums:

We are aware of an issue with the FPS limit on the Nintendo Switch 2 being lower than intended. We are working on a patch to resolve this issue.

When performance is acceptable, the handheld is an appealing mobile platform for shooters. Fans note that EA’s Apex Legends achieves the 60 fps that the Overwatch Switch 2 update was supposed to deliver. Rumors continue to swirl about a Call of Duty game coming to the console. Also, Handheld Mode Boost benefits titles not yet optimized for the system.
