Poor graphics in Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch 2 upgrade disappoint in performance reviews

Fans of sci-fi RPGs were pleasantly surprised when Nintendo shadow dropped the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 upgrade. Despite resolution and frame rate boosts, gamers are reporting several performance issues. Among other complaints, early reviews and impressions note blurry textures and abundant artifacts.
The Definitive Edition for the Monolith Soft release arrived on the original Switch in March 2025. Owners of the newer console already saw benefits thanks to backward compatibility. However, the Switch 2 Edition introduces 4K visuals when docked and 1080p in handheld mode, with 60fps available in either scenario.
Where did this Switch 2 upgrade go wrong?
RPG Site has provided one of the most thorough initial performance analyses of the game. While the article confirms the action is much more fluid, some drawbacks seen with the Switch version linger. Pop-in is obvious, even though the system should be able to load assets more quickly. Some textures also lack the definition players would expect at higher resolutions.
Handheld mode is particularly problematic, with numerous Redditors sharing footage of their experiences. Thick_Tone_4158 highlighted how objects in the environments shimmer to the point of distraction. SmithDoesGaming echoed those comments, showing how even character faces have a “muddy” appearance.
DLSS seems MIA
Many of the problems may be due to ineffective upscaling. It’s unclear which technology the developers are using, but it's unlikely that Nvidia’s option is to blame. In other Switch 2 games, DLSS has modernized graphics without excessive blurriness. Without this AI-powered magic, older Xenoblade Chronicles X assets become eyesores.
Adding to the frustration, the Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Switch 2 upgrade is not free. Nintendo supporters who already own the title will have to fork over $5/£4.19 for the update. A physical release with the upgrade bundled will debut on April 16th.
Even at a low price, some players are calling for a patch to address the flaws. Until then, many fans are finding that the 60fps visuals justify the small investment.
