Nintendo has announced in a trailer (embedded below) that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive what is likely its biggest update to date on January 15, 2026. The update consists of two parts: the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and the patch to version 3.0, which will also be available to players on the older Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition features improved graphics, and the game can finally be displayed in 4K resolution on TV. Nintendo is also using the additional power to expand the multiplayer mode from a maximum of eight to twelve players. Following the update, the game will support Joy-Con 2 mouse control. If a USB camera is connected, your own face can be displayed above your character when playing with friends. The upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition costs $4.99 in the Nintendo eShop. Those who do not yet own the game will have to pay $64.99 instead.
Alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Nintendo is also releasing a free update that introduces, among other things, a hotel whose rooms can be furnished by the player, with themes such as "beach" available as options. Players who satisfy guests receive hotel tickets that can be exchanged for special items. Resetti gets a new job with the patch, as the mole can now help players tidy up their island.
Another new feature is a dream world, essentially a second island that players can visit in their sleep. This island can be customized in many ways, with even the weather, inhabitants and time of day freely selectable. Lastly, the update introduces a range of new items, including classic game consoles that even grant access to selected Nintendo classics, provided users have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
