Ninkear A16 Pro laptop review: Affordable, powerful and quiet during use
Even better with AMD.
The Ninkear A16 Pro is a surprisingly good laptop from China fitted with the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS, 32 GB of RAM and a 1-TB SSD for around $840. With its good features, it outperforms its sister model, the N16 Pro, and even comes close to the Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 16. We found out exactly how close during our test.Christian Hintze, 👁 Christian Hintze (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - Lots of good, hardly any bad
With the release of the A16 Pro, Ninkear has once again proven that it can offer an affordable and high-quality alternative to models from established brands. Although we can't say anything about its long-term function, the A16 Pro impressed us during our test with its metal case, nice display, good and above all constant performance (even when running on battery power), and quiet operation for relatively little money. It definitely places ahead of its sister model—the N16 Pro—in terms of performance.
Points are deducted for its weak 720p webcam, and its very loud and somewhat cheap-looking clickpad detracts from its input devices' otherwise good user experience. But these are forgivable weaknesses. Despite its large battery, we were surprised at the laptop's weak battery life—although the manufacturer has stated a runtime of at least 10 hours. Plus, there is certainly still some room for improvement with regard to software optimization. Its USB ports could also do with being a little more modern.

Price and availability
At the time of writing, the Ninkear A16 isn't available to purchase in the United States, but if you are in Europe, you can purchase it from our lender Geekmaxi. It currently costs 779€ (approx. $842).

In recent times, Ninkear laptops have surprised us. The A15 Plus and the N16 Pro from the Far East did quite well in our tests, so now it's time to test the A16 Pro. Highlights include its metal case and, above all, its 16-inch screen with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels. Unlike the N16 Pro with an Intel CPU, this model is powered by an AMD Hawk Point processor and an integrated Radeon GPU. It costs just over $800. We took a look at how good its multimedia display really is and how well-rounded its office package is.
Specifications
Case & connectivity - A lot of unknowns in the A16 Pro
Despite there being some similarities, our A16 Pro also looks quite different from the N16 Pro on the outside. Ninkear has gone for even more metal and less plastic for its A16 Pro. Because everything is metallic blue, the A16 Pro looks as if it has been cast from a single mold. Unfortunately, the display lid crackles and cracks considerably when twisted. The base, on the other hand, is very stable.
Overall, its design looks great, with "Ninkear" in black lettering in one of the upper corners of the lid. Otherwise, the laptop shines with blue elegance and simplicity. The display can be opened by 180 degrees, but the hinge unfortunately doesn't grip tightly enough. The air outlets are concealed behind the long hinge, and a fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button.
The accessories are worthy of praise: In addition to the keyboard stickers in different language layouts, users also receive a USB mouse and mouse pad.
Unfortunately, its webcam only has a resolution of 720p and suffers from high color deviations and low sharpness. It only supports Wi-Fi 6 without the E suffix, so the fast 6 GHz network is missing, and its transfer rates in the 5 GHz network are rather average.
To open up the device, you just have to remove 13 Phillips screws. It seems that there are hardly any clamps on the base plate, so it comes off immediately. Inside, you can then access all the important components such as the SSD, RAM, battery, Wi-Fi module and cooling system. There is a second M.2 slot for SSDs.
Connectivity
Unfortunately, the laptop doesn't support Thunderbolt and the manufacturer doesn't seem to want to give any more details about the two USB-C ports—or what exactly does full-featured USB-C mean?

Sustainability
The laptop comes delivered in two cardboard boxes—one inside the other. On the inside, however, the packaging and protective materials consist of lots of plastic. The manufacturer hasn't provided any information about the CO2 emissions during production.
Input devices - Good keyboard, noisy touchpad keys
The keyboard's layout is super tidy and differs from the N16 Pro. On the right-hand side, a numeric keypad with small keys is squeezed in next to the other, quite large keys. Unfortunately, the vertical arrow keys are halved in height. The laptop comes with an American keyboard layout as standard, however, speakers of other languages needn't worry, as the manufacturer includes labeling stickers for various other languages.
It feels surprisingly good to type on the keyboard—although its travel is low, the feedback it provides is noticeable and the clicking noises are rather quiet, with only the space bar being noticeably louder. A two-level white backlight provides support in the dark.
The very large touchpad (approx. 12.8 x 9 cm) is easy to slide your finger over and perform gestures. Only the integrated mouse buttons seem a little cheap with their loud clicks and are therefore less pleasant to use, although the feedback is fine and reliably triggered.
Display - Ninkear with 1,600p, 400 nits and 120 Hz
When it comes to the installed matte IPS display, even Hwinfo has to pass ("unknown")—a search via the hardware ID (CSO1623) indicates it is a Lenovo panel, but this didn't yield any definitive results either. It has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, and should fully cover sRGB, have a high contrast and run at 120 Hz.
We measured an average brightness of just under 400 nits, and its illumination is a good 91%. Its black level is too high in its factory settings and the contrast suffers as a result. When calibrated, the screen's black level drops and the contrast rises to over 1,200:1.

Straight out of the box, the panel's color deviations and, above all, its black level are too high. Manual calibration using our Xrite colorimeter and the Calman software is a wonderful way to reduce the DeltaE values, and the black level then also drops. Our icc profile can be downloaded for free above. Unfortunately, the more-than-decent panel only covers sRGB.

Performance - The A16 Pro with AMD Hawk Point
The Ninkear A16 Pro is only available in one configuration, namely with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS including its integrated Radeon 780M, a generous 32 GB of RAM and a 1-TB SSD. This makes the 16-inch laptop particularly suitable for office use and some multimedia tasks. Thanks to the integrated NPU, it can also handle AI applications, although the latest models are even more powerful in this respect.
Testing conditions
The A16 Pro doesn't have its own preset performance profiles or a Control Center app. We therefore set the Windows energy profiles to "performance" for our performance benchmarks and to "energy saving" during the battery tests.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS from the Hawk Point series is classed as one of the more high-end laptop processors, has 8 cores and can process 16 threads simultaneously, with clock speeds ranging from 3.8 to 5.1 GHz. The integrated NPU for local AI applications achieves up to 16 TOPS, and the entire CPU manages up to 38 TOPS.
Our Cinebench R15 endurance test confirmed that the CPU performs very consistently without any drop in performance. The Ryzen performed exactly at the level of an Intel Ultra 7 155H in the Medion S10—the same processor in the Xiaomi RedmiBook Pro 16 was only slightly faster at the beginning, but this was equalized when it came to continuous performance.
Across all CPU tests, the Ryzen 7 performed slightly below our expectations, but still took second place in our comparison behind the RedmiBook, and it even placed ahead of the Medion and all other competitors.
Much to our delight, the A16 Pro doesn't lose any of its performance in battery mode, as a further Cinebench R15 run showed.

DPC latency
Slight problems occurred as soon as we moved the mouse pointer after starting LatencyMon. These increased minimally when opening the browser; opening several tabs then no longer had any influence on the value. Playing our 4K/60 fps YouTube video succeeded without any dropped frames, even if the latency value increased again slightly in the 10-second Prime95 test. Overall, however, the latency value wasn't very high and was even the second lowest in the comparison.

HWinfo also matched the SSD—our look inside the laptop revealed the brand name "Authorain" with a 1-TB capacity. A Google search didn't turn up anything on this either, but as we know, it isn't what it used to be. The nameplate says something about 6 GB/s, but we measured around 2 GB/s. The competitor models were faster, but you won't notice much of this in practice.
It maintained its performance for a long time under constant stress, but then struggled with slight drops during the last third of the test.

Graphics card
The Radeon 780M integrated into the CPU can be used for 3D applications. You won't be playing any current, demanding games with it, but it should nevertheless be sufficient for multimedia applications and at least some light gaming.
In the 3DMark test, it performed at the target level and outperformed the old Intel UHD Graphics inside the Ninkear N16 Pro. Compared to the Arc 8 Graphics in the Core Ultra 7 155H, our A16 Pro ranked in the middle between the very fast RedmiBook and the rather slow Medion S10—both with the same Intel iGPU.
Even in the 3D test via Fire Strike, no performance was lost away from the power outlet.
When gaming, it even did slightly better than the RedmiBook with the Intel Graphics, which shows that Intel is still wasting a lot of potential with its drivers. Old and less demanding games such as GTA V can also be played in Full HD with high details, while current titles such as Cyberpunk run smoothly in Full HD at best with medium details—but you'll more likely have to select minimum details. Its performance during the Cyberpunk 2077 endurance test was nice and consistent.

Emissions & power - The quiet and cool Ninkear
Noise emissions
The fans are mostly deactivated in idle mode. It isn't particularly loud under load either; our A16 Pro remained the quietest in the comparison.
During the 3DMark 06 test—our medium load scenario—the fans turned at the level of a quiet RedmiBook, and only at the very end did they rev up even higher.

Temperature
It only gets really hot on the bottom of the laptop in the center of the display. This is where we located a hot spot of around 50 °C. Everywhere else, the temperature development remained moderate at a maximum of 43 °C, and the palm rests stayed significantly cooler. However, the small USB-C power supply heated up to 56 °C.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50 °C / 122 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 35.7 °C / 96 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 31 °C / 87.8 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-3.4 °C / -6.1 F).

Speakers
The speakers are average at best, hardly reproduce any bass and only play at a disappointing volume. Analog audio devices can be connected via the jack output.
Power consumption
Its power consumption is pretty low, especially when idle. Its consumption rises slightly under load, but is still appropriate when compared to its performance. Unfortunately, we are missing the comparative values from the RedmiBook here, while the other, less powerful competitors consume less under load. The display's brightness wasn't insignificant when measuring its idle consumption, with around 4 to 5 watts being between low and full brightness.

Runtimes
Ninkear has installed a large 80-Wh battery, which is more than the competition features (with the exception of the RedmiBook). However, the laptop didn't last longer than its rivals, at least in our tests. 7.5 hours in the WLAN test was generally okay, but some competitors seemed to last longer with less capacity.
