A new program has appeared that unlocks PlayStation cloud streaming on PCs and the Steam Deck. Sony has an official PS Remote Play app, which lets gamers play PS4 and PS5 games over a network. Meanwhile, the PlayStation Plus alternative focuses on cloud functionality. However, neither option accomplishes what the third-party PSStream claims to do.
PSStream has been on Valve’s marketplace for several months, but is only now attracting attention. For $4.99, it “delivers high-quality, low-latency PS console and cloud streaming on PC, Steam Deck, and Linux.” Gamers should expect up to 1080p quality at 60 fps with HDR support. Still, another perk that only an updated PS Portal and PS5 offer is raising eyebrows.
Recently, Sony’s handheld gained the capability to run more PS5 games without a console. Not relying solely on PS Remote Play has made the mobile device more appealing, likely boosting its sales. A PS Plus Premium subscription includes cloud streaming for some titles. Even so, players are now able to access other owned games that are not part of the service.
How PSStream differs from other unofficial apps
As shown in a video from its developer, PSStream has tabs for Remote Play and Cloud Play. Within the Cloud Play section, gamers can browse a catalog of subscription-based titles. The PS5 Game Library menu is more intriguing, as it shows other compatible options that users have already purchased.
Initial reviews are positive, with customers claiming the app mirrors the newfound abilities of the PS Portal. Still, Sony may move to shut down the project. Since it connects to PSN accounts, there are serious security concerns. The company may also have plans to officially support its unique features on PCs.
Sony hasn’t yet targeted other third-party solutions like Chiaki. Yet the software uses identical APIs as the PS Remote Play app without circumventing security checks. More significantly, Chiaki doesn’t come with any cloud streaming benefits.
