Electronic Arts is extending the first season of Battlefield 6 and has postponed the launch of Season 2 to February 17, 2026. To bridge the gap, the development team plans to release an additional update. The decision, however, has sparked widespread criticism within the community.

According to a post shared on January 13 on the official Battlefield subreddit, the delay is intended to give the development team additional time for polishing and quality assurance ahead of Season 2. The developers also used the announcement to thank the community for its continued support and feedback since the launch of Battlefield 6 last October – a release that Electronic Arts has described as the most successful in the franchise’s history.

In retrospect, the publisher has referred to Season 1 as “packed,” pointing to the launch of the REDSEC battle royale mode, story content centered on the California Resistance, the year-end Winter Offensive event, as well as multiple stability and gameplay updates. At the same time, the developers have acknowledged that Season 1 ultimately fell short of its full potential.

Extension update aims to bridge the gap

The Extension Update, scheduled for January 20, is intended to bridge the extended wait until Season 2 and keep players engaged with additional content. The current Battle Pass will remain active but will be expanded with new weekly challenges, an extra bonus path and multiple double XP periods. The update will also place greater emphasis on selected Portal experiences. Full patch notes will be published separately in the “Game Updates” section of the official Battlefield 6 website.

Community reaction is largely negative

While Electronic Arts frames the delay as a necessary step to ensure quality, the reaction on Reddit has been largely negative. Many players have voiced frustration, drawing comparisons to earlier struggles within the series. Some commenters have described the delay as yet another misstep in the franchise’s live service strategy. In particular, the publisher’s characterization of Season 1 as “packed” has struck a nerve. Critics point to the limited number of new maps, few weapon additions and an overreliance on temporary events rather than lasting content. Bugs and technical issues, some remark sarcastically, have been the only consistent “content” throughout the season.

REDSEC, Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode, has attracted particularly strong criticism. Many players view it as a misallocation of development resources and say they feel sidelined as paying customers of the main game. The increased focus on the free-to-play experience is seen by some as an indication that classic Battlefield modes such as Conquest and Rush have taken a back seat. Progression systems have also come under scrutiny – with complaints about overly complex, overlapping paths, excessive grind and rewards that are either missing or incorrectly granted, contributing to growing frustration within the community.

Only a small number of players believe the delay of Season 2 will result in meaningful improvements. Many are calling for at least three to four large maps at launch, but expectations remain low. Instead, players fear a continuation of reskins and short-lived game modes. For many in the community, Season 2 is shaping up to be a make-or-break moment for Battlefield 6. Should the update fail to deliver, a growing number of fans say they are prepared to walk away from the game entirely.
