Miyoo has finally released its second clamshell gaming handheld, over five months after evidence of the device emerged online. As expected, the Miyoo Mini Flip is much smaller than other recent clamshell retro gaming handhelds, whether that be Miyoo's existing Flip, Powkiddy's V90S or Anbernic's RG34XX SP and RG35XX SP (curr. $69.99 on Amazon).
In fact, the Mini Flip is about as wide as the Mini V4 at around 65 mm. The former is over 10% heavier than the latter though, with a 2,500 mAh battery contributing to the Mini Flip's 120 g weight. Nonetheless, the Mini Flip contains the same 2.8-inch display, which resolves at a comparatively high resolution of 750 x 560 pixels.
Moreover, Miyoo has turned to the same ARM Cortex-A7 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, which is powerful enough to emulate up to Nintendo DS and PlayStation games. Also, the device's display delivers 2x or 3x integer scaling for SNES and Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) games, among other classic systems. Additionally, the decision to retain the same chipset as the Mini V4 provides the Mini Flip with Onion OS support out of the box.
Apparently, Miyoo has overhauled its hinge mechanism for the Mini Flip, too. A persistent issue for both Miyoo Flip variants, the new hinge appears to open as smoothly as equivalents found in Anbernic's alternatives. Ultimately, we would still recommend reserving judgement until more independent reviews arrive.
The Miyoo Mini Flip is available from today in multiple colours with a starting price of $52.99 before shipping and taxes. Please note that this pricing includes a 64 GB microSD card. Also, Miyoo will eventually raise the minimum cost of the Mini Flip to $59.99. Please see Miyoo's website for more details.
