The talented modder Natalie the Nerd has already illustrated how the Lego Game Boy (from $49 on Amazon) can be turned into a functional gaming handheld. This modding kit will now become accessible to all gaming enthusiasts, as BrickBoy will be crowdfunded via Kickstarter starting on October 28.
This kit makes it possible to modify the Lego Game Boy in just a few minutes. The electronics integrate into the game cartridge, which people can simply insert into the Lego Game Boy instead of the placeholder Lego modules. Users can install the display and the electronics for the buttons in about five minutes and without any tools.
The video embedded below shows the entire process. BrickBoy plays ROM files via an emulator, so using original game cartridges is not possible. That said, BrickBoy always ships with a 2.4-inch display, a mainboard and all necessary buttons. However, the cheaper "Essential Kit" only supports Game Boy titles, and the case protrudes on the back due to the two AA batteries.
Alternatively, the more expensive "Gamer Kit" has a built-in battery and supports games that were originally developed for the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. The more expensive kit is also the only one that includes adjustable display lighting, WiFi for wireless game transfers, Bluetooth for headphones and the option to adjust the emulator speed. Pricing details should be confirmed when the Kickstarter campaign starts on October 28.
